Buckshot vs Slug: The final debate.

Postby Heckenshutze » 30 Nov 2016, 14:31

LET THE DEBATE BEGINS!

There are only two types of people on the Sulaco: Buckshot or Slugs.

Which one is better? Which one is worse? Yes? No? Depends? Explain.

Here is my own opinion: I'm a slug guy, because this three reasons:

* Less FF

* More range

* Better chance of hitting a runner sprinting.

Pros of Slugs:

* Armor Piercing

* More bullet range

* More accurate

Cons:

* Lesser damage

* Not powerful enough to take down T2-T3

* You actually have to aim, since there's no additional buckshot.

Cons of buckshot:
* Heavy damage at close range

* Can kill T2 to T3's

* More chances to hit multiple times with one shot

* Spreads so you can hit multiple targets at once.

Cons of buckshot:

* Short range

* More FF

* Damage depends on range.

Give your opinion, tell me if i'm wrong, say your reasons, pick a side.

Slug basically sacrifices the one true advantage shotguns have over Rifles, which is insane T3 destroying CQC damage and knockdown; a shotgun using slugs is basically a shittier rifle (and let's be honest, it's best to tailor attachments to one or the other; Buckshot should generally be running bayonet or barrel charger and gyro (off-hand shield or another shotgun/rifle), whereas slug wants all the accuracy boosters; overlap is both generally want magnetic).

Therefore, buckshot is better; especially if running combat drugs.

Don't say that you don't have to aim with buckshot. You do. Just not in the same way you'd aim with a slug. Using buckshot is all about positioning yourself. You need to get close to the xeno to get good damage with it. It's also about timing. Don't fire your buckshot when you're in a crowd of marines, and don't rush out to get that buckshot hit because that's how you get FF'd to death. Wait for the xenos to come to you, then surprise them with buckshot. Rushing out to get a buckshot hit will get you, once again, FF'd or hugged. Buckshot is definitely stronger than slugs though, which is why FF with it does so much damage. You can take a crusher from healthy to crit in a single shot if the RNG favors you, or kill an Elite Empress without even having to reload.

Buckshot is godlike. But slug is a huge chunk of metal and I will always respect that.

Slugs.

Because if I see anyone besides Harry Cowper, Meredith Reunings or a select other few loading buckshot into their shotgun you can safely assume I'm going to be a mile away from them until they inevitably get hugger decapped.

Buckshot goons are far too common these days, and they always bring the sweet release of death to their squadmates in the form of crippling amounts of FF.

...buckshot DOES stun. If you're close enough for a slug to stun, then buckshot would have done more damage as well as stunned.

Am I scum for taking both?

I can't decide between the two and I'm constantly swapping it up (which makes me amazed I haven't friendly fired anyone yet).

I never take shotguns typically, but I've always found slugs to be kind of a more damage per shot, less damage overall, alternative to a rifle as stated above. I'd load up on combat stims if they're available, grab a barrel charger, harness and a homemade bayonet and attempt to weasel in good buckshots on ballsy xenos whenever I do take a shotty.

Swapping them based on the situation is generally how they are meant to be used.

Whenever I get a tactishotty I actually load it with both in an alternating order. If I get incendiaries, though, I replace slugs with them.

slugs are so weak they make me cry, even tho i would love to use them if they were useful, the thing with slugs is...buckshot is better at close range and m41 is better at long range, there is 0 reason to choose slugs atm, buckshot DOES stun at the same range slugs do with more damage, slugs lose SO MUCH damage at range, i dont see any reason to use em besides handicapping yourself for RP reasons really, they should just make all slugs incendiary

In practice, the problem with swapping is that your attachments tend to be focused on one over the other; also a slug shottie kinda blows compared to a rifle.

Beyond that, one of the big advantages of buckshot is you take gyro on it, and then can have an alternate range orientated gun in the off-hand (like a gyroed rifle).

If you're really committed to using both slugs and buckshot I guess bayonet + magnetic + foregrip isn't a bad option, but as is I think slugs are too weak to justify.

What do you think about the Buckshot-Wooden Stock-Bayonet combo? 100% CQC Based weapon.

If you can get the extra attachments great, but unless the RO is going to hand out a stock in addition to your magnetic and gyro/foregrip, not worth sacrificing an attachment for your rail or underslung (and if you can get a third attachment, you're probably better off getting another gyro for an off-hand rifle or second shotgun to complement your main weapon).

I myself prefer Slugs over Buckshot, for a number of reasons..

Besides working a bit better against heavily armored enemies, I like knowing that I'll be able to fire a concentrated blast of damage without the risk of accidentally killing a friendly right next to me. It also helps that the range gives you a bit more leeway, while buckshot requires you to be within hugger range just to get a good pump.

Buckshot works bests with infected, suicidal marines, where huggers aren't a problem anymore and they don't care about dying. For those that aren't infected and don't want to get killed right away, Slugs are a safer bet.

I think when it comes to slug, the best use of them is in fast firing weapons, hence why I enjoy slapping an underslug shotgun when I can. Only 5 shots, but they are pretty nifty in a pinch.
Sometimes, bravery comes from the most unlikely sources.

they need to buff either the damage or the fire rate of slugs, I prefer the latter, I will never forget that time an elite hunter took 4 slugs from 3tiles range and just walked away........I imagine it takes fuckin 6 slugs to crit ancient T2.....not to mention T3, with the time it takes to fire that much while buckshot can INSTANTLY do 4 or 5x damage I think slugs do need some love

I take buckshot exclusively when I take a shotty. Then again I only take a shotty as a Medic or PO. To save my patients and well...nothing tells that hunter to GTFO your ship like a mouth full of buckshot.

Cuckshot only. The shotgun is supposed to be a CQC weapon and joy of getting to spray so much shot at a ayy brings me great joy.

Slugs are better for controlling the situation (for me), such as when I'm up against a Hunter and need to give it the benefit of the doubt. I have used buckshot a couple of times, but only against Drones and Sentinels, mostly because they're the most predictable in combat. You can say that it's better to resort to slugs for a more flexible style of handling your situations and preventing FF, but that's what gives Runner castes an easy target. Slugs are easy to avoid, and it takes half a frame to dodge via running (hunter and runner), you don't want that happening. The overall limits of buckshot are based on range, accuracy, and recoil, and because you're limited to five tiles before the shells run out of kinetic energy due to friction, you're a target to Sentinels and Carriers.

Neither are superior, given how shotguns today are limited to what shell types they can use based on the individual model, the M37A2 is actually an advance in future technology, making it more reliable for combat. Also, just like how bean bag shells are mixed in actual shotguns to function as a "warning shot" before the actual lethal round is chambered, both slug and buckshot shells can be mixed up to the user's will. They're based on the situation at hand, if you're trying to kill a runner, you don't ever want to use buckshot in general given how the pounce mechanics are instant, you want to keep your distance and make sure it retreats to heal, so you're better off with slugs. If you're up against a sentinel, buckshot might as well be your best friend.

You will never be as bad as the baldie who picked up a tactical shotgun while a hunter was pouncing on top of a CMO for 4 seconds, with his only response being to pace around before being decap'd by said hunter. You are not Brett Kimple, and you never will be. You are not the reason why I regular MP.

The key to maximum overrobust is to load your shotgun with buckshot, but top it off with a single slug. That way when you fire it, the xenos will go "pffft he has slugs loaded what a scrub". And get buckshot'd on the next pump.

I cant tell you how many times I seen hunters and runners get crit'd mid pounce with buckshot, also their number one nightmare is when they cant move after pouncing on someone and you just walk to them and ass-blast them into oblivion with point blank buckshot, oh and the damage drop on slug in range is so ridiculous it takes 3 slugs to finish off a crit drone 8tiles away, slug just doesn't have any use, if you want to fight at range then why did you pick up a shotgun over M4 and if you want to fight in close range then buckshot is way better

Imo, if you're going to use slugs, might aswell take a M41A instead of a shotgun. The stun lasts a few seconds and is enough for a xeno to get away without taking too much damage or taking any at all. Buckshot, however, damages them pretty badly, enough to crit a young runner or hunter if you're using a barrel charger in just one shot. It can also kill fellow marines in one shot if you're not careful/bald.

The ammo types for shotguns always leads to two things that is fit for your playstyle;
cqc-Buckshot
Long range-slugs
Front man-buckshot
somewhat support-slugs

Anyway I been using buckshot since it's fun to ko a xeno in one hit when they try to pounce near you. If I want my slugs on my shotgun to be more accurate then I would be making sure I don't have a bayonet on it since it would somewhat decrease your acc, thats just me though.
