someone who follows orders, watches their firing lane and stays with the squad. They could be one of the worst on the server when it comes to combat, but if they follow those 3 rules they're a perfect standard

One that doesn't take the AP, follows orders, doesn't rambo, doesn't FF... Mostly just not being an idiot. Also one who preferably has hair.

I consider myself a pretty good Standard. I don't fire if a xeno is near a standing teamate, I check my LoF, and I pass around ammo if someone needs it. I do tend to stick with other marines and run off to help during combat instead of sticking with my squad, which is a minor peeve seeing as how it works better having a static name around you to help you. Boots tend to fold like cardboard if a static name isn't around to haul them back to the safe areas when they get hugged and I think I fill that niche pretty well.

As a latejoin standard I always drop with a bag of food and a bag of tricord injectors, And load up on flares in my bag. Also good things to grab is more ammo, helmets (IF TOLD) and stuff like that.
Other than that stick with your squad and try not to ff the people with the cool guns.
Remember that you're meat for the grinder and try to make yourself useful meat, bring flares, flashlights, supplies, anything and you're already doing better than most PFCs.
For first drop you can bring shittons of flares, But make sure you hoard them until later on else you're just wasting them.

The supply pizza. Just shove 40 pulse rifle mags, 10 flare pouches, 5 boxes worth of shotgun slug handfuls, 5 boxes of buckshot handfuls, and a couple dozen throwing knives into a pizza. When people ask for supplies just put it on a table and slice it, and all the supplies pop out.

the perfect standard for me is the one that:
-doesn't fill more than his belt with ammo
-takes only 1 or 2 AP mags
-does not use burst fire at all, shot by shot, even if he FFs its minor damage
-brings a roll of gauze/ointment/flare pouch/food on helmet with him
-has a knife in his boot
-spams clearing xeno weeds
-follows orders and only moves around in a group of 2+
-communicates and tells SL/command staff whats happening around him all the time
-takes the hugger off AND SHAKES YOU instead of stabbing you in the head
-targets chest and chest only
-tries to suicide when infected in nest instead of just ghosting, even if he doesn't succeed he still kept a xeno or two busy from attacking marines on the frontline
-retreats when told to and while doing it drags dead bodies or a bag full of empty mags for refill
-bonus points if you have a beard shit im sexist

PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT. You think a marine not using burstfire won't still FF you 3 times and break your bones. The ideal marine picks up their empty mags after they reload and puts them back in their belt/backpack/webbing. Bonus points if it's AP mags that they're not leaving behind.

Re: What do you think makes the perfect standard

Here are a few things I like to think about while i'm going as a standard, granted sometimes you can't complete or do some of them but they're always good to think about during the round.

My own small code I like to run by is if I can save another marines life over my Wooki's, I'll attempt to do it. This normally ends with Wooks disobeying an order to stay put and instead going off to save a marine but hey-ho a marine life saved is one that later on can reinforce you.

- If you see a marine get grabbed go up to that xeno and suckerpunch it with point blank and a whole load of rounds to save that marine or do your best to try, xenos highly underestimate marines if aliens seem to be on a win streak (Battle wise) and generally don't expect that. (Always nice to make the unexpected happen.)

- Provide cover fire if marines are falling back.

- Clearing weeds from the Fob to the frontlines. (Just generally clear weeds where ever you can.)

- Clear Resin structures, resin walls, doors and sticky resin because chances are if the xenos chose to build there and in that manner it would be naive to assume it will help you as a marine by following the tight resin paths.

- Bring back the wounded or dead from the frontlines. This one is rather important as generally on the frontlines everyone gets hooked up in holding the line that when the time comes for a retreat there are still a load of wounded and dead that they need to be brought back and as such that's why it should be a priority to take them back so the marines can fight another day.

- If a marine gets stunned and you see a xeno going for them, run up to the stunned marine and try to defend them best you can, if you have enough time shake them up but usually the best thing to do is pull them back.

- Probably falls under my third point but remember to pick up heads and load them along with the bodies if you can find them on a shuttle back to the Sulaco.

- If there is a spare crate and everything hasn't gone to hell around the Fob take the crate out of the Fob and go around with a few marines collecting empty mags with the crate and once that's done load it up on the shuttle for requisitions to refill.

from my personal experience not using burst fire is actualy better in combat too, i find myself doing more damage to xenos using 1 per 1 bullets and finishing xenos is a loooot faster also single bullets go exactly where you click they dont stray like burst so yes less FF more accuracy, just dont get fire rate raping attachments like stocks and railscopes

Then you've clearly not seen marines shooting down at where they *think* the aliens are, except the aliens have been chased off, and suddenly I'm gettin shot from off screen by AP ammo.

Honestly, one of the reasons M4 ammo runs out so fast is because people use burst fire and spray and pray, rather than using more controlled fire to conserve ammo. A single bullet is more than enough to scare off a xeno, no need to use burst unless you are certain you can make the hit.

As for the topic at hand, I always strive to be the best standard I can be... It is just that sometimes, it is hard to pull off. Even the best standards can only do so much without good leadership. You ever been in a squad without an SL? It is tough not having something to orbit.
Taking a good, long break... Ahh, who am I kidding?

Sometimes, bravery comes from the most unlikely sources.

A good standard to me is a person that is loyal until the end and doesn't run away from the enemy when you are in the need of him, what is important is to save lifes, not take lifes in the battlefield, i consider myself the most loyal guy you ever gonna find in the battlefield, i don't care if there's a queen and a bunch of xenos dragging my team-mate, i'll go there and show who's the boss and rescue my dude, it doesn't matter if i get taken, at least i tried to save a life!

It does matter though...the xenos just got 2 new hosts because they guarded one on the way back and another blindly charged in.

Someone who doesn't use buckshot and stands behind you, or doesn't use burst fire on an AP m4 with a barrelcharger.

-Either asked for assistance when they first joined or learned the ropes quick enough for us not to notice how green they were.
-Can comprehend revolutionary ideas such as Teamwork and Self-Sacrifice.
-Doesn't take the AP unless he knows EXACTLY WHAT HE'S GOING TO DO WITH IT AND WHEN AND HOW MANY MARINES WILL BE AROUND AND THE WIND VELOCITY AT THE PRECISE MOMENT OF DISCHARGE.
-Carries extra munitions, MREs, basic medical supplies and cigs.
-Doesn't rely on fancy attachments, uses the bayonet religiously.

2.A PJ wearing grunt who's only line of dialogue to the protagonist is, "Is that the last Zippo? I'll trade you some AP."
3.A nested marine who's squadmate is close enough to the protagonist that they can hear your comrade telling you your beyond fucked.
4.A wounded marine who's body is rolled by the protagonist as he exits surgery.
5.A bullet-riddled corpse half way on to the bridge during a Iron Bears take-over.
6.A marine that the protagonist sees fall during a retreat back across the river but can't save in time and is dragged off.
7.That gunfire and scream that the protagonist hears as they move through the Xeno-infested Sulaco.

Just to add to this thread again, remember that being a standard makes you the number one jack of all trades as you're primary objective as a standard is never set in stone unlike the specialised roles such as medics, specs and engineers who have their designated objectives from the get go of joining the round.

What I mean by this is that standards are very much free to help out where needed, examples being:

1) You see an engineer fixing floodlights by themselves, head over and protect them.

2) The medic is too busy dealing with injured to move the dead back or the stable injured so drag the dead/injured back.

3) The engineer is moving displaced girders to fortify an Lz, help out by moving the displaced girders to the Lz.

4) You hear someone shout "engineering!" on the radio, head over there and help out.

Etc, etc.

Switch between intents when in and out of combat, green for no combat, harm for combat unless you want to bayonet a xeno, in that case use any intent other then harm.

Collect empty mags and dump them by the lz if the area around them is clear.

Also remember that when/if a marine gets pounced in front of you aim a tile or a couple of tiles behind the xeno, don't click on them directly as generally you'll end up hitting the marine on the ground with a few stray shots as they are sharing the same tile, If you aim a few tiles behind the xeno who pounced that marine you won't hit the marine on the ground unless they stand up.

With that logic, doesn't that mean no one is the protagonist... Or that EVERYONE is the protagonist?

Or that maybe, the title of protagonist just comes and goes. One moment you find yourself in the spotlight, the next, you are just an extra to someone else's story.

Or maybe... this is getting complicated.
