1.A blood-stained corpse that the protagonist sees while looking for ammo at the front-lines.
2.A PJ wearing grunt who's only line of dialogue to the protagonist is, "Is that the last Zippo? I'll trade you some AP."
3.A nested marine who's squadmate is close enough to the protagonist that they can hear your comrade telling you your beyond fucked.
4.A wounded marine who's body is rolled by the protagonist as he exits surgery.
5.A bullet-riddled corpse half way on to the bridge during a Iron Bears take-over.
6.A marine that the protagonist sees fall during a retreat back across the river but can't save in time and is dragged off.
7.That gunfire and scream that the protagonist hears as they move through the Xeno-infested Sulaco.
Or one of the many, many, many other minor-characters in the great Epic that is SS13: Colonial Marines.
With that logic, doesn't that mean no one is the protagonist... Or that EVERYONE is the protagonist?
Or that maybe, the title of protagonist just comes and goes. One moment you find yourself in the spotlight, the next, you are just an extra to someone else's story.
Or maybe... this is getting complicated.
We are all the protagonist but only the protagonist sometimes. In short, the moral is don't meta by preserving your character just for the sake of trying to survive until the end of the round.
It's better to die assisting your wounded comrades or holding off xenos rather than living by pushing marines out of the way as you retreat across the river so you can die in the mess hall while making your way to the uncalled Evac shuttles ten minutes later.
