Radio communications : the main RP tips

For those hadn't had the possibility to make some Military Simulation RP or has no real experiences with military or such.. Armies studied and produced an awesome method to ensure that comms are structured in a way that limit possibilities of misunderstanding.

I want this to be a marine law.

Radio etiquette.
Commander Joseph 'Goliath' Clancy, occaisonal Charlie SL. Widowed father of three. Sufferer of PTSD and way too caring.
Corpswoman Judith 'Mèrci' Clancy, quiet daughter looking for her father.
Warrant Officer Emile Clancy, Strict ex-police chief looking out for his sisters.
Xenomorph Queen 'Pandinus' ruler of the Alpha Hive. Unusually diplomatic.
R'ka Us'Tribi Serpent Trapper, hateful predator. "FUCKING SERPENT BASTARDS KILLED MY BROTHERS".

Remember to say "I say again" instead of "I repeat". Or is that just a British thing?

Saying "Over and out", means literally that you are out of this conversation. Basically, you are reporting something, and you don't need an answer. You are stating a fact. "This is Delta Lead, FOB is fortified at 95%. Over and out." You can also order something that doesn't require any answers from your interlocutor, or you don't accept any answers. "Delta SL, this is Command. Accomplish your fucking mission, or face the consequences. Over and out."

Please dont do that.

"Over and out" is a made up by hollywood. You say over when you expect a reply and when you dont, you only say out.

Over and Out
A conflicting term introduced by Hollywood and Military wannabes. In mediocre movies, the phrase is said to acknowledge a response on the radio. In actuality, "Over" means that you have heard the message and expect a reply while "Out" means that you have heard the message but you are ending the conversation.
Soldier 1 : "Eh Sergeant, didn't that Corporal fail his radio test?"
Soldier 2 : "That Chuck Norris addict said 'Over and Out' like the Holly-fucking-wood movie!"

Basically, you can reduce word : I repeat = Repeating.

Military use each word for its meaning. "Say again" would be used to ask someone to repeat. But if you answer, in my opinion "Repeating :..." would fit better.

Here is another kewl thing to say on radio :
"Command, this Delta Lead, with all due respect : Foxtrot Uniform. Delta Lead out. " (do not go shipside after saying that)

Edited over and out thingy based on that betrayal from Alan Jones. Alan, expect boots stolen at every deployment. Bwahahaha

Saying "Break" tells people to stfu so you can talk.
I personally like to end most of my communications in game with "how copy" or (to subordinates)"understood". This way im expecting their acknowledgement.

Some advice in communicating when requesting fire missions; This is somewhat based on actual procedures but MUCH simplified for use in the game.

Note: All of the communication must be done over the command channel (:v)

OBs (orbital Bombardment):

For this you need an SL in the ground who requests the fire mission and also plants the beacon and an SO to evaluate the fire mission, adjust it and to send it.
Step 1: Requesting fire mission and confirming it.

It is important to make the command channel aware of your request as well as the squad you belong to, so that someone can provide overwatch on time.
SL: Command, DELTA lead here, requesting fire mission/OB, how copy?

Now the person in the CIC will respond and confirm their request.
SO: We read you delta lead. Fire mission confirmed, send us the coordinates, over.
Step 2: Planting beacon and Giving coordinated and confirming coordinates.

When you belive that the OB will have the desired impact on the target you may also include the phrase “Fire for effect”.

SL: Fire for effect, Delta beacon, X+5 Y-5, over.

The SO will now have to confirm the coordinates and input them in the console.
SO: Fire for effect, Delta beacon, X+5 Y-5, out.

At this point the SL may still make any corrections he feels necessary. Same procedure follows, SL announces coordinates and the SO confirms.

SL: Correction, Delta beacon, x+5 Y+5, over.
SO: Correction confirmed. Delta beacon, X+5 Y+5, out.
Step 3: Giving the fire order.

Up to this moment the SL can make adjustment/corrections. However once the fire order has been given no further adjustments can be done.

SL: Shot, over. / SL: Fire fire fire.
SO: Shot, out. / SO: Slpash in 5 seconds. / Fire mission complete.
Once the shot lands, the SL can tell the SO about the effect of the fire mission.

These steps should ensure a relatively safe OB strike and an effective one as well.

Alternatively if coordinates are not given or the OB is requested by the SO, the SO himself will have to input coordinates and announce the fire mission over the command and squad comms to avoid friendly causalities.

I want this to be a marine law.
*CO comes up to marine walking out of surgery with new prosthetic arm*
"You didn't end your transmission with "Over"."
*Matebas*

This seems like a particularly HRP thing to do in an MRP server, and making it law would only lead to people getting needlessly brigged because they didn't say "over" while calling in an OB as a xeno was ripping their arm off.

Im pretty sure that wasnt meant -literaly-. Goliath was basically just saying “We need more of this” in a fancy way.

You kinda missed it.

It would lead to less shouting on the command channel about which SL is talking right now.

And less confusion on the RO channel about which SO is requesting a drop.

Yeah pretty much.

It'd be to hard to teach the community to do it and it'd probably be a very, very minor offense if it was even considered.

But I might make it a CO gimmick.

I agree with all of this. Except as a SL you don't 'Out' a LT. I've been kicked in the ass before for that. Also let the officer 'out' it makes them feel sparkly.

Also for all of you that I know will do it. Never say over and out. Just don't. Muh immersions.

Example:
Alpha:CIC, this Alpha Spec, Alpha lead is gone out.
Charlie:CIC, this Charlie lead, FOB under heavy attack from west Nexus, requestion firing support over!
CIC:Charlie, this CIC, understood, Air support in 30 seconds, over.
Charlie: CIC, this Charlie lead, marking targets, out.

Something Like that?
