Normal LV-624 Event

Post by MauroVega » 12 Feb 2018, 13:42

For those that were on during that event, this is a recording from a janitor's POV
It may have taken a long time to set up,but it was worth it,it was really fun watching how marine RP interacts with a standard RP
the discord chatter only makes it better

Hope you enjoy

That was such a good event. So sad it crashed though just as the dramatic point took place when the zombies came. Was a good mix of RP and then action. Hopefully there'll be something like that in the future again.

Wasnt supposed to be Zombies.

Only added them to hasten the round up as the server was slowly dying.

Oh. Then why did it take so long to set up? The colonists? That was cool, seeing the colony not in shambles.

Most likely the setup time was fixing the colony, cleaning everything, setting up the colonists, their ID's and access. Fixing the walls the broken ones and girders. And all that stuff. Normal LV-642 is a heckin' mess. And ofcourse repairing the Piano.

For some reason it was decided early on that only Alpha squad was allowed planetside while the other squads had to spend the round sitting in the break room playing cards or smoking cigarettes. While ordinarily this is fine, it was almost 2 hours of me with my thumb up my ass listening to all the interesting stuff going on elsewhere. The server crashing was just the cherry on the turd.

Because of a lot of low RP going on was why most of the marines were recalled. Unfortunate that high pop plus bored marines lead to them breaking things and hurting each other due to there being nothing to shoot at. Even the recall didn't help, since the marines just continued unga dunga'ing on the ship throwing things at each other and shooting themselves in the head.

Even from the start it was an issue. The OOC memeing in chat during the event set-up carried over in game and marines were spamming comms with dumb shit about soy food and requisitions taking too long to serve almost 300 marines.

Oh, I do remember hearing that on OOC. I suppose this is why we can’t have nice things.

Marines literally cannot RP or act normal for any situation.

Rather than Roleplay with the colonist they simply marched in and started stealing, destroying and causing problems.

I mean to be fair that's kind of historically accurate, lol.

Besides, the ones that roleplay are basically just running interference for the looters.

I was latejoin, but Wanda the Research Director let me be a research assistant; she was very protective of Lisa, and marines kept walking in and trying to take her, at one point succeeding. At another point a PFC threatened me with a knife for not letting him take research material. Then a marine just wordlessly walked up outside the window to her cage, shot the window, then shot Lisa to death, then ran.
The whole thing was a mess, the long wait time to setup mixed with news of an event going on lead to something like 270 players.
Also at the very beginning the colonists were spawned in the colony but due to the game start were all teleported automatically to cryo, and had to be all teleported back.
Also according to the marshals a marine broke into security and just asked "can I get a webbing," like it was all normal.
I mean, there IS something to say about marines looting and disrespecting locals; there's something else to say about THAT.

Wonderful idea, but the sheer setup time and difficulty of execution let it down. It didn't help that people were, for some reason, hyping the event up big time in OOC almost the whole way through setup. I can only imagine what the 200+ (!!) marine players were expecting, and while the concept is interesting I honestly don't know what the expectation was as to how all these people would somehow find something to amuse themselves with without any antagonists. Really, the worst offenders were the hype men bigging it up - the kind of people who totally fail to empathise with the vast majority of players who really aren't going to engage with the event or even have a chance to. Even if all 200 (seriously, two hundred or more marine players were in this thing) of the marines actually wanted to roleplay planetside it STILL wouldn't really be possible. The map isn't really large enough, nor does it have enough stuff like regular SS13 does to accomodate the playerbase, and even if ten marines each took one colonist as their special 'roleplay flavour' for the event you'd still have a ton left over with nothing to do.

From my point of view as a colonist, I was actually surprised by how well the marines took it, considering just how long they waited and how much hype was (wrongly) stirred up for it. I'd bet that the majority of marine players readied up were expecting something absolutely fucking earth-shattering, like a CLF vs UPP vs PMC vs USCM showdown or something.

All that said, though, I enjoyed the event for what it was, but it's definitely something more suited to lowpop rather than primetime. It's not really slander to say that the average CM player veers on the low side of medRP at the best of times - I'd be happy to play full-on extended given the right people were also playing, but I doubt the majority of the playerbase would if they were truthful about it.

As I recall, there was a lot more to it planned; it was supposed to be a secret thing where xenomorphs were there, but not in force yet, as if the colony administrator wasn't an idiot and already knew of xenos, and knew he needed help, while no one else would know about the xenos, alpha would go into the caves and be wiped out by xenos that were spawned in and then the round would more or less go on normally. A problem was though was that marines kept beelining for bodies, trying to find any evidence that the colonists were CLF, because they honestly thought that's what they were for a while, CLF pretending to be colonists, and that was the event.
Due to everything going on, how marines were being total asshats, the server was having a hard time with 270+ players, and some other factors, fuck it was said and zombies spawned.

that round was utter hell for me as a mod, and I'm glad I didn't even bother to "play" that round.

It really is sad that, when given an event that requires a bit of roleplay BEFORE the shooting starts, marines would rather blow their own brains out than bother to behave like adults. I'm serious, I recall at least 2-3 cases of suicide because it seems they couldn't handle the boredom.

Hell, the fact that marines are so quick to throw away their image as protectors of the colonies so they can engage in acts of looting and pillaging disgusts me. The USCM is supposed to PROTECT the colonist, yet most players would rather act like space pirates and raiders. And don't get me started on the dozen marines that kept rushing north to explore the caves, ruining any RP by metaing the caves early and finding shit they weren't supposed to be seeing.

Most marine players hate anything outside the norm unless they can shoot it. Even when they can shoot it they still want to be able to shoot it faster. One time an XO wanted most marines to stay on the ship while one squad did recon. It lead to around 5 suicides, including an SO. I can't even imagine how marines reacted to not being able to raid the colony for better gear, that they didn't even need this event!

Maybe if it was on Big Red, with xenos in the labs and the colonists hiding them from marines, it could work better, but even then someone will unga dunga and break shit.
I play as Ian Evans, the guy that is either dead after five minutes, or is the hero the USCM deserves. Usually the first one.

As the CO that round, the event was a mess.

The lowrp was so much I had to tell Feweh to unfuck the Marines. As for sending 3 squads up, I just followed HCs orders.

This is why we can't have nice things, the evnt would've worked perfect on med-pop rounds.

I can't imagine the workload the mods had as they were all Trial ones.

I think it would be worth investing the time in making "clean" versions of the maps for use in events that don't involve xenos, perhaps even pre-loaded maps designed for specific events. Setting everything up seems to be the dullest part of running events, and I can see how it could be demoralizing to see your 10 minutes of repetitive spawning and explaining the event to spawned parties trashed by people who don't like even a temporary change in pace.

I think people will chill out more during events as more are played though. I remember tribes being a meme more than anything half a year ago, but about a month ago I played a tribes round that people generally seemed to like. I definitely enjoyed it, and i'm sad I missed the 'normal colony' RP action.

Literally no hostiles on the map and marines still managed to kill one or two of themselves with friendly fire.

No I don't know how.

Yeah the soy food thing was odd, did it actually do anything?

Oh man, I had the fun of being an SO that round. Looking back on this recording Im actually a little impressed at how well the boots stuck together. Between the SLs assertive guidance and my repeated threats of insubordination I want to say that my squad made a complete withdraw with little mess. Compelely lost track of which of the 40+ marines on the squad moniter were actually colonists during the withdraw though. Glad to hear that tagging everybody not on the ship as insubordinate got cleaned up without much fuss.

I ended up cryoing a bit after that mess because of how frustrating things were getting with the combo of byond stalling out on me every few minutes and extraneous, bored command crew interjecting on the tacnet.

8/10 would love to see this again.

Ehh..yeah. I have been in the round. It was fun. But I'm sorry for making the mods a hassle since I entered the caves and accidentaly found the bodies.

But I had fun while it lasted.
