digitalis application for coder

Post by Challenger » 12 Jun 2017, 18:56

Byond ID:
digitalis

Age:
18, which is the age of majority in my country.

Gender:
Male

How would you define yourself? (Coder, Mapper, Spriter):
Coder

If Coder, what languages?
C++, Python, Lisp, copy-pasting javascript.

Any previous experience developing with SS13?
I contributed to the open-source /vg/station under the alias of despotate.

Proof of any previous or current work:
These are my closed /vg/station pull requests.
I generally worked on simple QOL measures and refactoring.
My largest single PR was a refactor of the virus2 code. Essentially virus2 used to be coded such that there was the virus, its effects, and an "effect holder" between the two that sounds as unnecessarily complicated as you think it is. While the PR didn't add any features on its own, it made it much simpler for others to add and modify viruses in the future.
My largest single actual feature was a new virus effect. It piggybacked off the abovementioned refactor. It gives you a chance of shattering any glass containers you're holding. Very fun for the virologist who infects himself with it and then can't cure it.
My best learned mistake was when I tried to fix an incredibly inconsequential issue related to collision and it ended up crashing the server three times in a row, five minutes in, until I got my reverts through.
My largest balance change was when I crippled the ability for viruses to stack. This was necessary after seeing many, many rounds where some uncreative antag would just generate a bunch of virus dishes and shatter them all over the place and essentially force a shuttle call because everyone would get hit with a hundred effects at once. I performed the fix by having viruses "take turns" to take effect so that you might be experiencing 100 symptoms, but you'll only experience one symptoms' worth at a time.
In addition, before leaving the server, I'd begun work on a new method of beneficial and malicious virology involving the harvest of human organs.

Also I spent a few minutes of my time reorganizing CM's vendor contents in a suggestion (http://colonial-marines.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=13095) and no one's taken me up on the offer to send me the code to do it myself. Grr.

How well do you know Git?
I use it to a passable level and occasionally read a big guide on how to use it then forget everything the next day. You can generally trust me not to push directly to production or hard reset my own work or something.

Your primary job is server development, not policing the server. You may be given Moderator-level of access but you should *not* be invoking any administrative actions unless there are no moderators or Admins online. Do you understand? (Yes/No)
Yes. If I'm given flags that are unrelated to coding, I will make sure to only invoke them if no one else who's more competent with them can.

Anything else you'd like to add?
I've been playing and observing Colonial Marines for only a few months now, but they've been a greatly enjoyable few months. I usually play as Ilan Rahal. I don't have great ambitions to add massive new features or fundamental gameplay changes to Colonial marines, but rather would enjoy tweaking, fixing, and implementing the small things that take us away from the clunky interface of the game into the fun, immersive world of a marine force battling a xenomorphic colony. You can see some examples of what I'd like to implement in the suggestions I've added to the relevant subforum, although I'd always try to run any significant changes past people with more experience and game design knowledge to make sure I'm not going in over my head. I'm not at all opposed to implementing others' suggestions or bugfixes either, good ideas might be cheap but that doesn't mean they're common. Above all I'm more than willing to learn - the code, to work with staff, and to be a better player as well.

With that being said I've had my flaws and mistakes to reflect on. Most notably at the moment I'm banned from /vg/station, the server I'd contributed code to, which was also my introduction to Space Station 13 and the world of mass multiplayer roleplaying. Without going into a long list of reasons, I wasn't a good fit for what I'd call the informal style of the server, which combined with my inexperience ended up having me run into into a list of infractions accrued over my year of playing there. My latest appeal can be seen here http://ss13.moe/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3746, and I plan on appealing at the end of June as asked to get a cleaner slate. I hope the best for /vg/'s community and staff, and don't plan on contributing significant code changes to them should I be taken on as a coder here. I also have a few notes and forum warnings here, have taken the time to reflect on them, and will steer clear of tarnishing the staff's reputation with any more misconduct should I be accepted.

With all that said, I hope you take me on to let me contribute as a coder.

You currently have 2 notes on the forums. One is from Apophis for arguing the rules in the rules clarification thread, and another is from myself for breaking the forum rules.

How have you changed since receiving these warnings?

I haven't had any massive personal transformations from those two notes but they've made be more careful with the context and application of the forum rules. I do have to mention that my first warning came from arguing in a thread that didn't actually have a rule against arguing until after I'd done so, as I'd misconstrued the intent of that thread as more of a community discussion with the staff than a place for final rulings. The second warning came from posting in a very lengthy ban appeal that took a turn towards discussing roleplay interactions between medical and command staff, and I'd added a non-witness statement in an attempt to help the OP resolve similar issues in a roleplay manner. Regardless, both incidents were a failure on my part to interpret and apply the forum rules to my own behaviour, and I've since taken the due diligence to make sure I'm posting in the right context at the right time.

While I cannot 'vote' on this I can give my feedback. I do not know how skilled they are at coding or things of that nature. But my interactions with them on the forum have all been rather negative. They seem like someone who feels they are always right and offer very little to any valid criticisms or potential points when prompted and instead just shitpost and meme. Especially as evidenced by their responses to my criticisms of the latest changes. Which leads me to believe one of two things, either they don't understand how to respond properly to criticism or opposing views, which is bad, OR they simply don't care which is arguably worse.

Take that as you will.

This is the interaction in question. Maybe I was a bit heavyhanded on stating that gunfire should be the main weapon against xenos and not one hit stuns.
Why did you think that the "close the door" comment was directed at you, and not the guy who I responded to, saying "They will start caring when people stop playing."?

I've interacted with Rahal on discord and he isn't such a bad guy there, maybe a bit judgemental on the forums but he's an okay guy in my opinion.
I play Garth Pawolski; mostly just dead guy.

Predator: Nracha-dte Kv'var-de (Relentless Hunter).

We've been discussing this, and we are going with denied for now.

You need to stop shit-talking devs and work to not cause so many problems in discord if you want to be brought onto the team.

We can't have someone who's going to create conflict or cause issues between devs in the dev team.
