IE33 - Moderator Application

Post by Terran » 28 Jul 2017, 03:53

Byond ID:
IE33

Colonial Marines Character:
Megan 'Min' Terran, Alexey 'Terran' Fedorov

Age:
17

Gender:
Male

Timezone:
GMT +3

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
30-40 hours

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
Yes, I was admin on another SS13 server and couple of Starbound servers.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
Played on Alpha version

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
Probably only Animus Station 13.

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
None

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
No

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
Yes, I was banned for 3 days once.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?
No

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
I belive it is similar to discord, so probably it won't be hard to learn using it.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
Check player's notes. If it is the first time he does that - add note and allow MPs to handle him. If it is not for the first time, ask player why he did this and apply ban if his actions look like grief.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
Check if that breach was caused by either the player or DS collision. If it was made by player, then I would find out who did this breach, ask him about the reason he did it, add notes to that player and warn him if it was done for the first time or ban if he does it often. If DS collision caused this breach to appear I'll watch if engineers are trying to fix it. If not - I will probably ask more higher-ranking person about fixing it because it ruins whole gameplay. If he approves it - fix.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
Ask that player if he plays first time here. If yes - contact mentors who are online and ask them to help him. If there are no mentors available, I'll give him link to a wiki page with quickstarter guide. and probably call mentors via slack.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
If his sutiation really requires a hirher ranking staff member - ask if anyone wants to handle him. If it doesn't - then I'll add note, continue working on his problem and try to ignore his rudeness.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I'll contact that player and inform him that his name doesn't fit setting of this server. Then I'll check his notes and if he was warned about that earlier - ban him. If he continues to argue, I'll give him exact reasons to change name and warn about inevitable ban if he refuses to do so.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
I'll allow MP to handle him. If someone complaints about him - add note.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Tell to him that only researchers, CMO and doctors can preform surgeries, add notes and warn him. If it wasn't first time he does that - ban him for metagaming.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
Check why marines won't leave the ship. If all dropships are crashed - ask admin to teleport all alive xenos to Almayer. If one or both of dropships are intact then I'll perform MOTHER scan so marines could see their superiority and attack xenos.

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
Say to him that he is an antagonist and shooting antagonists after round end is allowed by the rules.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
Add notes to that player and allow MP to handle him. If his actions start to become more violent or if he starts shooting and kills marine - sleep him, ask him why he did this and if he had no proper reason to do it - ban for griefing and then heal all who was injured by his actions.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
I'd check his notes. If he did the same earlier - ban him for griefing and heal killed marine. If that aws first time - warn him and add notes.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
Ask any of Admins that are available for help. If there are no admins online I'll contact them via slack and ask for help.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
If that doesn't go any futher than minor racist comments - tell to player that it is allowed. But if he keeps complaining I'll ask theese players to stop.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
Heal all wounded, ban that player for a week and request a perma for him.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
I'll ask him why he does that and check his note history. If his notes are fill with that kind of stuff - jobban player from xenos. If he is doing it for the first time - warn him about that, add notes and ban for 3 hours.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
If he does that constantly - warn him and add note. If he did that 1 or 2 times then I'll just add note and tell him that memeing as xeno is not allowed and ask to stop.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
I'd ask that player to act like xeno because some of players don't like his behavior. If he ignores my messages - warn and add notes.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
I'd contact that player, warn them and add notes. If it is not the first time he's been seen metagaming - apply ban and add notes.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
If noone complaints - I'd just ignore that because that is IC situation.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
I would PM that staff member and tell him my opinion about the rule and that he might be wrong. If he says that I'm wrong - I'd ask another staff members about their opinion.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
I'll save logs and ask that staff member to stop. Then I'll contact higher ranking staff and give them logs of his abuse.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
I'd just ignore him.

Any additional information you'd like to add?
Probably no.

My main issue i can see with this is that it seems rather ban happy, you haven't really specified that you'd talk to the players or do any sort of investigation, just ban them if they have notes for it. Also it's apparent to me that there's lots of typos, this isn't an issue within itself, but to me it makes it look like you've rushed this, not proof read it and maybe from that not put extra thought into your answers.

In most of my responses I contact a player and ask him about situation. And my problem is I haven't actually worked on a server with notes before, so I have very little experience of handling players with many notes. And most of the time I'd contact players if they have a lot of notes. About the investigation though - I'll add some information about the attack and say logs.

I didn't rush this, this is the issue with myself. I often do typos when writing something on english.

A couple of things, firstly, if you have typos, it means you haven't proof read it, that's all. And the notes thing doesn't make sense, you'll only contact them if they have notes?

I'd just check notes first to see how to deal with particular player and contact them anyways if they have no notes.

-1.

To me it's a huge fault to issue a note/punishment IF SOMEONE COMPLAINS.

17. Xeno can/will use normal speech including terms like dropship/lz etc as they are one mind/hive and understand as a unity. They don't really communicate.

So yeah, to me, not a reason to warn/note.

Other than that I appreciate the fact you favorize IC issues than straight going in through an intervention.

Why were you banned 3 days?

I don't actually remember it, because it was 6 or so months ago, but notes says that I griefed one player and was rude in PMs.

I'm gonna have to -1 this too, overall the application is rather low effort and there seems to be an obviously barrier between how the system works and how you think it works, i feel like you jump to banning a bit much too.

I can see a fatal mistake. My ckey doesn't match my forum account and this is auto-denied... That is bad, but as far as I can see nobody likes me.

You have two people - 1 you and you give up?

As a Moderator, your going to be dealing with the most high quality, weaponized (to be blunt) autism you have ever seen before. You will encounter rude people, BR's, russians, griefers, people who could argue our rules till the end of the rode just to get out of getting banned after they spinned the rules so many times you don't even know what way is up. You will deal with a lot of pressure from people like this on a daily basis; if you can't handle someone giving you feedback and - 1'ing you on an application, you won't be able to handle being a moderator.

Thats just my opinion; neutral until you listen to Kavrick's advice.

Ok, so, these are a few issues ive spotted

2. And if there are no higher ranking staff online?
4. So you wouldnt ask the player to quiet down, and be respectful?
5. The way you have worded this answer, it makes it seem like you wouldnt give the player the exact reason for their name change, until they pressed the issue further.
6. You'd add a note to that MT without speaking to them?
7. Few issues here, no mention of you telling the medic to close the patient immideatly, no mention of job ban, and its powergaming, not metagaming
11. Fine, but theres no mention of the ban reason - improper escalation, or wether or not you would heal the marine if it was the killers first time.
17. Xeno hivemind is the english translation of xeno thought, so you don't really need to note for it.
19. You shouldnt just ignore it, you should be checking the logs to verify if it was indeed an RP incident or if he just said it was.
21. Ignoring the situation isnt always the best option

This, in addition to no ban times, leads me to vote -1

We dont hate you, but you're applying for a moderator position, got your Ckey wrong, minimal post history, multiple bans, and my few interactions with your IC character have been toxic, to say the least.

It's not exactly a terrible application, but could genuinelly do with more improvements. Similiar to what others have said before me I don't really think you put enough effort into this application.

Try to be more active on the forums, and study up more on ban times, and feel free to try again in the future, but for now, for reasons mentioned above, i'm going to have to -1.

2. Ask them via slack.
4. I am used to dealing with the players who are retarded and ignore admin's requests. Didn't even think about that.
5. I mean, if the player can't understand me and says that he can't see any reasons to change name — I'll provide them.
6. Forgot about that part...
7. I had a little different idea of metagame.
11. If he is griefer and banned - healing of all wounded is obvious.
17. Okay...
19. I have some information that there are no SAY logs and if that was in evac pod, than probably there are no other evidences exept words of theese 2 players.
21. And what I can do? Mute his OOC for 5 minutes or what? I belive that if player really hates me then all my requests to stop won't help.

I'm neutral on this for now, one of my concerns is how you're taking your feedback. You are free to reply and show that you're learning from what the responses on your application are teaching you. I would also agree that there is a bit of ban-happiness in your application, while I understand you're implying that you would speak to the player first, check their notes, it's better if you explicitly state that. Checking notes and talking to players resolves probably 85% of all the issues you will face. Bans honestly aren't all too commonplace from my experience watching the higher-ups handle situations, and most players are happy to change behavior if prompted by a staff member to do so.

While you have mentioned that you would talk to players before banning, perhaps focus more on that then actually carrying out a punishment. How might you speak to them? Would you be more of a coach rather than a boss type? Think through how you might convince the player that simply deterring from their behavior is the best course without necessarily putting anything against them except some notes.

After refreshing myself by looking on your notes, ABSOLUTELY NOT. You pretty much have notes for five-days straight in February, until my ban for Exploiting / Powergaming.

-1.

You need more time here, and at that you need less notes - it appears that when you're on Colonial-Marines, your common sense completely disappears.

I'm going to deny this. You can reapply in 30 days. Use that time to refrain from getting anymore notes and bans, and to ask questions of the server staff and get a better understanding of how we operate.
