Tidomann - Moderator Application

Post by Tidomann » 20 Jul 2017, 12:23

Byond ID:Tidomann

Colonial Marines Character: Random Name

Age: 27

Gender: Male

Timezone: EST

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
6-12 hours

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
Board game clubs at each university I attended. Vice president of the club at the second university, as none existed. Running clans and admining community servers for things like TF2, Aliens vs. Predator, Counter-strike/1.6/source/whatever it is now. Being team liaison to sponsors for competitive gaming.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
No

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
tg station, paradise station

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
I am not currently a staff member for any communities.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
No

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?

Maybe about 6 years ago when I first started playing SS13. I took the AI role- not really comprehending what I was doing.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
Have used it in the past to coordinate groups of friends.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained them.
If the MPs have it under control let it play out as an IC issue, do not artificially intervene. Check the players notes to see if this is a common behavior. Check the logs to see if proper escalation has occurred, even if it is early in the round. Misfires do happen. If proper escalation wasn't followed, ask the player to explain their actions and issue a warning. Note the interaction. If the player has previous notes, judge the severity which could lead to a ban (3hr, 24hr, 3 days, 7 days, depending on ban history).

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
Outside of obvious breaches such as a shuttle or pred bomb that are allowed, fix the current breach and fix the air because of its immediate impact. Check the logs to see what occurred, whether it was intentional or accidental.
Intentional- Speak with the player and make them aware that their behavior is against the server rules. Inform them that I will be issuing a 1 day ban, and that senior staff will review the incident. Note the incident. Follow up with senior staff to judge whether they would be further punished.
Accidental- Let the player know their actions caused the breach to avoid it occurring again. Note the incident. See if any mod+ would be inclined to help the dying marines.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
Inform a mentor if they available. If not, ask the player if they require any help. If they do, try to reach a mentor on slack. If they are not available then help the marine. If they respond that they don't need any help let it resolve as an in character issue.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
I'd let the player know I'm doing my best to help them. If the situation truly needs to be escalated I would get the attention of one online or Slack if none were online. If it didn't need an admin I would help the player, and attempt to diffuse the situation. If the player is being excessively abusive then a note might be in order.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
I would speak with the player and inform them of the naming rules. I would add a note containing the name. Once they raise these points I would apologize and reiterate that the rule still pertains to this situation and as the motto goes "ignorance is not an excuse." If and admin+ is available the characters name can be changed during the round, if not I would ask the player to change their name during the next round. If they do not change their name in the following round, speak with the player and potentially see if they can be removed from the round before issuing a ban. If they are particularly attached to the name, let them know they have a chance to make an appeal on the forums.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
As it stands, this is an in character issue. I would still check the players note history to avoid a potential problem. If someone ahelps it I would speak with the maintenance tech to inform them of the roleplay guidelines.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Ask them to close the wound and inform them that medics are not allowed to do surgery. Check the players prior note history to gauge their behavior. If they comply I could let them off with a note and a warning. If they continue or, have done this in the past I would add another note, and inform them that they are being job banned from medic. Depending on their history of power gaming or performing activities outside of their role, I would warn them that further actions that are not role appropriate will lead to a timed ban from the server.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
If I felt it was truly necessary I would ask an admin to trigger an event in game to push towards a finale (be it a ERT, Ares command/Hive command/Fax response). However, this really doesn't follow under my responsibilities as a moderator.

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
Explain to the Iron Bear that marine vs antag combat is not considered EORG.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
As it stands, this is an in character issue. I would still check the players history to avoid a potential problem. If people begin to ahelp his behavior, I would inform him of the role play guidelines. If the player has an note history I could see about a 3 hour ban.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
Check the players notes. Check the logs to confirm his story. If it was indeed a case of improper escalation, I would add a note to the offending player and if they have done similar things in the past I would apply a 24 hour ban. 3 days if they have been banned before for the same offense.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
PM an admin+ for help with the issue. If non are available, send a message through slack, followed by explaining the situation to the best of my abilities.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
Inform the player of Rule 1: Don't be a dick. Add a note to the profile. Further action all depends on the players note history, and the severity of what was said.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
Check the logs to see who was responsible and ban them for 3 days. Escalate as necessary depending on their previous history (3->7->Perma). I would see if a mod+ was available to heal those that were injured by the griefer if they did not respond lethally and if they needed it.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
Speak with the player and warn them not to do this. While they may think it could have been interesting roleplay they need to understand that they are wasting lives that other people could be using, and are indeed breaking RP guidelines. Add a note. If this is reoccurring behavior I would apply a job ban from xeno.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
This is not bad in moderation. If it was every once in a while I would ignore it. If it was constant I would ask the player to moderate their chat and add a note. If they have several notes about this I would apply a job ban.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
While some players refer to in-game locations or object indirectly or with different names- let the player know hive mind is a translated version of the abstract representation of the Xeno hivemind and saying "dropship" is fine.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
Check the player notes. Warn them that giving this information is metagaming and that the nature of the automated distress beacon does not give indication as to why it was sent. I would add a note. If this problem is a constant occurrence then warn them that the next warning may lead to a job ban.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
Check the killers notes, and speak to the victim to get the story. Check the logs and see if there was proper escalation. Benefits to the killer if the victim agrees that it was handled IC. If the victim DOES NOT agree it was done IC with proper escalation, I would have to review the logs. It's a delicate situation. In the end- I may have to note the occurrence. If they have been noted for similar infractions, give them a 3-24 hour ban.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
Politely PM the staff member so that they may correct the mistake.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
PM the offending staff member, letting them know what actions I want to speak about and why they are wrong. I would ask that they stop the abuse. I'd inform a higher ranked staff member, and if the situation calls for it file a staff report.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
Nothing. Unless they take it way too far I'd then have to remind them of rule 1, and write a note. If it persists after the warning just mute their OOC.

Any additional information you'd like to add?
Even if there are areas I need to improve upon, doing this was at least interesting to see exactly how the community works.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Overall, this is very solid, and I haven't spotted any serious mistakes after a cursory read.

You seem to have a very good grasp of the rules, and the right mindset for the task, so a +1 from me.

Out of curiosity, how do you know so much about byond adminning mechanics, yet previous experience doesn't list ss13 servers?

I would be new to Byond adminning mechanics. That being said, I'm quick to take up new procedures and new systems. Seeing some youtube videos that show the amount of abbreviations when you admin message people is very intriguing. Considering how quickly I've been to learn the rules and mechanics of colonial marines, I think I'll be comfortable taking a few days to a week learning about the tools available. I'll look to see if I can find some generalized guides on viewing logs and notes. I'm sure any CM specific tools (ie breach fixing) I'll be able to learn or ask about. The only reason I'm so familiar with byond adminning is through my own research and reading so far.

I will go through every single question later and attempt to give my opinions on those more in-depth, but as it stands, I see no major problems with this at all, and it is a very well put together staff application.

Any slight misunderstandings or kinks can easily be worked out during your trial. I think you would make a fine staff member, so here is a hearty +1 from me.

Very solid application. Can't judge your IC behavior as you play with a random name.

RP situations are valuable and mods should generally try to preserve them. In situation 13), everything is going on IC. Are you sure one person's complaint about minor racist comments IC is worth destroying good RP?

Solid +1
Player PM from player/(Larva (247)) (?): It's totally realistic to challenge someone to do boxing for a mouse trap, in the middle of a alien occupation.
AHELP: Player/(Player) : HELP HELP HELP I SAWED SOMEOEN HEAD OFF! I DIDNT MEAN TOO

13 Is a very subjective question. It really depends on the severity of the messages and exactly how the person complained. I think I may have taken it more out of context, as the question does indeed say "minor." I think you are right that preserving some good RP is in the interest of maintaining the roleplay standards of colonial marines, at the same time we need to keep the server inviting for everyone. Common sense, and being able to properly judge exactly how the person ahelping is feeling, and how verbose or severe the the racism is ultimately determines if it's worth interrupting or not.

See if the person in mind can speak up to control it IC if it is minor. In the end- ahelping to either tone it down or stop it completely would be steps to take if the other players take it beyond an acceptable level.

Thanks for the feedback

Ok I'll look through this but I can say I do like that you have put a decent research into this app. Which is nice
  • For question 1, this is pretty good
  • For question 2, I would say a day ban would be overly harsh and would be really dependent on their note history. Also for the accidental section how would you word that note?
  • For question 3, this is fine
  • For question 4, this is fine
  • For question 5, decently researched answer
  • For question 6, best just to leave this as an IC issue. Maybe throw a bone to the mps.
  • For question 7, good work
  • For question 8, good
  • For question 9, nice work avoid that
  • For question 10, fine
  • For question 11, a tad harsh on the punishment, if it has happened before and the player was banned then maybe a day ban would be fine but if it was a note, probably best to follow standard ban escalation of 3 hours, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days
  • For question 12, perfect
  • For question 13, might want to lighten up on this one but as you put it " depends on ... severity of what was said"
  • For question 14, what if you couldn't find any mod+s online? What would you do then?
  • For question 15, perfect
  • For question 16, good
  • For question 17, good
  • For question 18, good
  • For question 19, fine
  • For question 20, guess this is ok
  • For question 21, fine
I applaud you for doing the research and the effort you put in was shown. I will give you a solid +1 but I can see a few possible issues but one of them being your notes, which are all pretty minor but still could be a an issue due to how recent some of them can be. The most recent note was understandable but the incident related to it could of been handled a tad better but it was still handled pretty well.

2. I thought breaches were dealt with a bit harsher- but I guess that is a left over stipulation with plasma/phoron gas releases. In the event that it was an accident-

Code: Select all

"Accidental breach - Player X was attempting to break into research as a boiler. When applying acid to the walls they inadvertently caused some floor tiles to disappear."
Being able to see some of the logs would help identify exactly what happened- ie did they somehow apply acid to the floor tiles? Did some weird interaction with an alien beside them occur? These are some details I might include, or even use to submit a bug report after.

6. When you say throw a bone- what is the best method to do this? Prayer type messages, or ahelp? Or are there better ways to do it and keep it in Character?

14. See if any are available via Slack. In the meantime I could see if I could nudge any medics or doctors their way to help bring them back if they are revivable.

20. I figure- let the staff member fix his own mistake. Only step in if they don't happen to make the correction. I should state that I still want to make sure the rules are enforced correctly. Everyone makes mistakes and hopefully learns from them, staff just needs to learn quick. Depending on the severity of the misinformation I can follow up and observe and make sure everything is corrected. If it's fairly minor it shouldn't be tying up two staff members and I can always make a reminder to check back in a few minutes.

Thanks for taking the time to go through them thoroughly TheSpoonyCroy, and thanks for the compliment!

For 6, mods have tools that can send a subtle message which basically gives a player a message like "You hear a voice in your head say .... " Pretty handy tool to get some things deal with ICly.
