Cairath - Moderator Application

Post by Cairath » 07 Sep 2017, 20:13

Byond ID: Cairath

Colonial Marines Character: Victoria Vile

Age: 22

Gender: Male

Timezone: GMT +2

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? Between 15 - 20 hours depending on my schedule. I have days in which I am glued to it while I have days in which I don't touch CM.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?

I have. I have been a Game Master for the game called Heroes of Newerth for about 6 months, after which I gave up because of life issues (yet I continue to volunteer there as a community event host). I have also worked as a Community Manager for the company named Nival in which I directed a team of forum moderators.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?

No, not that I can remember. I started playing about a month and a half ago.

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?

I don't play on any other SS13 server besides CM. I have played a bit on /tg/.

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:

viewtopic.php?f=142&t=14543 Commander Whitelist Application

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?

I am part of CET (Community Event Team) for the game called Heroes of Newerth and act as a moderator for the community events part of the forums, among other things.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?

I have never been banned on Colonial Marines.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?

I have never been banned on any server.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?

Yes, I have. I have used it to coordinate with a team of moderators.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.

First of all, look into the person's history and the event itself. If this was just someone randomly letting loose a bullet because of an accidental missclick and they don't have a history of such things, allow it to slide as an IC issue. If they shot someone several times, then proceed to investigate the situation, look at anything that might've caused this and then PM the aggressor. Depending on their answer, the state of the person that was shot and the person's history, proceed to either warn them and apply a note or even issue a 3 hour ban. If the victim has died because of this and no doctors or medics have taken care of them, proceed to heal them back up.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.

Determine whether this was done by a player or by the dropship. If it's the latter, I do not interfere. If it was caused by a player, I investigate to see who did it and what caused it, as certain events such as a predator gauntlet exploding are not punishable. Once the root of the problem has been determined, proceed to have the breach fixed, heal up those that have died because of it and PM the one who caused this. Depending on his answers, his note history ,whether this was done intentionally or not and how much damage this breach caused, I will issue either a note and a warning or a ban, length depending on note history.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.

First of all, check his notes and history. If this is someone who is clearly new, then direct a mentor to them and inform that mentor to give that person a hand. Provided there are no mentors available, keep an eye on them to make sure they don't do anything stupid and contact a mentor on slack or any other means to try and get them in. Provided a mentor isn't available at all, I'd give the lost individual a few tips, link them the marine quickstart guide and continue keeping an eye on them to make sure they stay out of trouble.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.

Keep a levelheaded attitude and appear indifferent towards the individual while telling them to calm down and pipe down on the insults, attempting not to get side-tracked from the initial issue we were discussing. I would ask for an Admin+ on slack and see if I can get them on at this individual's behest. If no Admin+ is available, tell the person to take their complaint to the forums. If they continue to be extremely insulting and berating, I would likely apply a warning and a note, maybe even a ban provided they keep at it and have a note history of acting this way.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.

Tell them to change their name as it does not fit with our naming rules, rules are not circumvented by anecdotal evidence. Inform the person that ignorance of the rules is not an excuse nor is it acceptable and put a note on their account regarding the naming issue. Tell them to appeal it on the forums provided they believe it is not breaking the naming rule.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.

This is an IC issue rather than OOC issue as far as I see it. MPs are to apprehend him and deal with him. If the Maintenance Technician isn't going around blasting people with the rifle or breaking any rule, this is strictly an IC issue. At most I would attempt to remind an MP about security levels, proper uniform and unauthorized weapons.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.

With the new skill system, Squad Medics can no longer perform surgery as far as I know. If this changes, tell the Squad Medic to quickly stop the surgery and take the wounded to an actually trained professional while issuing a warning and a note, maybe even a ban if the person has history of such behavior.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?

I am unsure if mods have access to the USCM High Command announcements or Queen Mother. If they do, I would send an announcement about the importance of this operation, the importance of acting fast and the lowliness of cowardice. The marines clearly have the advantage in such numbers:
Example of USCM High Command announcement:
It has come to our attention that the combat activity of your operation has halted. We would like to remind everyone aboard the Almayer that they are marines and they must complete this operation under any circumstance. Failure to restart combat activity of this operation in a timely manner will result in severe punishment for the command staff aboard the Almayer.

Example of Queen Mother announcement:
The tallhosts fight tooth and nail, leaving many of your sisters dead in their wake. The time is nigh, go forth and eliminate them! Take the battle to the tallhosts, gather them, make more sisters. Do to their hive what they have done to ours!

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.

Explain to the Iron Bear that end of round grief rules do not apply for players of opposing sides attacking each other, such as xenos and marines.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.

Keep an eye on them. This is an IC issue and will likely be dealt with by the MPs. If MPs don't act on this, message one of them to remind them about Marine Law or direct them towards the marine. If the marine is causing a lot of trouble and there are no MPs, message them to stop it.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.

Investigate the situation by checking logs and getting the whole story from the aggressor and the victim. If the victim was merely shot after one punch and no other action, add a note to the aggressor's account about improper escalation and depending on their note history, issue a ban of either 3 hours or more. If no doctors or medics are around to treat the killed marine, heal them. If the victim antagonized, attacked several times and insulted the person and the situation was more than just a simple punch, then allow it to slide as an IC issue.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.

Attempt to get an Admin+ to take care of it ingame. If there is none, detail the situation on slack and attempt to ping one. If there are still none then write down the situation and attempt to bring it up with an Admin+ when one does arrive.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
Provided it's all in character and not extremely harsh, tell the player that it's an IC issue and that marines are often rowdy and rude. If they situation gets out of hand and some rather horrendous things are said, message the player to try and pipe it down.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
Proceed to heal up the killed individuals and tell them, in LOOC if they are all in briefing most likely, to stop messaging staff and continue regular play. Once done, I would check the person's notes. If this was their first offense, I would add a note detailing exactly what they did and a 24 hour ban to their account if this were their first offense or 7 days if they have history, likely pushing for permanent ban if this is something they have done before.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.

Investigate the situation first and ask the player why they did so. In the case that they player spawned out of a marine and among other marines, it's likely they panicked and ran towards the direction with the fewest marines, this of course excusing their death. If they however have no proper explanation, then explain to them that they can ghost if they do not wish to play as a xeno, freeing up the body for someone else to take, and then warn them and apply a note. If they have history of doing this, apply a jobban and a 3 hour ban.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.

Message them telling them that they must act like a xenomorph and that such speech is unacceptable. Warn them and add a note to their account if this is their first offense or give them a 3 hour ban if they are a repeat offender.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".

Xenomorph speech is interpreted speech and they are allowed to use words such as 'dropship' or other descriptors. Inform the player that this is not against the rules.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.

Send a message in OOC telling the marines that they do not know what kind of threat they are facing and then message the Command staff player. Tell them that they are metagaming and that it is against the rules, adding a note to their account and warning them if this is their first offense or handing out a Command jobban if they are a repeat offender.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.

Check the logs and investigate a bit to see if there was any interaction between the marines. This is an IC issue if the marines argued and it really was the last spot on an EVAC Pod, humans will forgo values and morals when their life is on the line. If the person however gunned down someone randomly or ripped an entire hallway apart just to be the one on the evac pod, then I would apply a note and likely ban then for 3 hours or more depending on their note history.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.

Talk to the fellow staff member and inform them of what they're doing wrong and help them fix the issue.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.

Gather evidence about what the staff member is doing before telling them to stop it. After that, send a message to the appropriate senior staff member with the evidence and information about what was happening.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.

Ignore it, some people are quite uncouth.

Any additional information you'd like to add?

Not quite.

Excellent application, this applicant has done their homework and I can confidently give them my +1. Solid mentioning of notes, and what would be done to escalate a situation if they have a past history of similar behavior. They do have a single note on their account, however the note isn't very severe and is very light, giving them credit for their roleplay and intent.

I believe this applicant would be a great addition to the team.

1: Okay, but if they got griefed it's best to aheal them before the doctors and medics have to get to them. Saves hassle.

2: Looks good.

3: Yep.

4: Clear cut case of "Let me speak to the manager." They don't get to speak to the manager, mute their ahelp and note them if needed.

5: Yeah that's good.

6: Subtle messaging an MP is also a good idea if it gets really bad, but good.

7: Good.

8: Yeah that's good. We don't have high command as mods but we have queen mother.

9: Good.

10: Use subtle message instead of PM to peserve the RP of the round if possible.

11: Good. Just remember that we go punch-melee-gun, as a sidenote.

12: Good

13: If someone is ahelping racist comments it's usually good to tell them to stop it.

14: Ban times is iffy, can't blame you - the rest is solid.

15: Jobban straight away for this. Not tolerated.

16: Light memeing is okay, if they go overboard make sure to give them the swat.

17: Yep.

18: This is good. But if they mention aliens such as "Farwa" it's pretty much okay. No go on xenos, though.

19: Looks good.

20: This is pretty much fine.

20a: Nope. Don't tell them to stop, just go to their superior (jerkface00, SLC97, FreeMySoul)

21: Yep.

Allow me to answer:

5. If they do not change it at the next roundstart, I would give them a 3 hour ban.

7. That's kind of what I meant by telling them to stop, though once more, I believe they simply can't do it anymore with the new skill system.

15. The jobban and 3 hour ban are in case they are a repeat offender. Someone wasting xeno larvae like that ought not to play xeno.

19. Depends on what notes they have. If this person appears to seek out such confrontations and has shown a far too great eagerness to kill others using that excuse, it would be pertinent to give them a ban if they've been warned before.

20. Of course. I wouldn't 'call out' someone or attempt to correct them in a demeaning way, I'd merely offer to help and point out what they did wrong in a friendly manner.

20a. In my mind, it would be better to tell them to halt what they are doing to put a bandaid on the situation, possibly stopping further complaints from coming their way.

Hmm, that is a bit hard to answer at first glance. Bravo McBeardo was being ganked on by 3 people and while he did get injected with bicardine, it would be understandable why someone would resort to shooting the three individuals that attacked him. He does have a note, but that's from January 2016, which means that he has not accumulated any this last year he's been playing. It also depends if the buckshot killed the individuals and what he did afterwards. If he killed them, then I would likely give him a note saying "Killed 3 marines who were punching him." If he however only landed them in crit and then made sure that they received medical care (likely told to do so in my PM with him), I wouldn't add a note. I may be missing the mark completely on this one, but I feel like the natural, in character decision to shoot the three held water, even if only a little.

I like the rest of this application, but you are off the mark with the hypothetical.

Punches never equal bullets unless you are in almost crit. The guy was being healed, and you gotta look at the gaps. The gap would indicate a passage of time between the punches, the administration of bicaridine, and the shotgun blasts. All in all, that's a no go and was poorly RPed by everyone involved. Everyone in that situation except the medic would receive a warning or a ban.

Understood. Was thrown quite off and didn't quite considered the severity of the attacks, or at least compare them that is. Live and learn, I presume. Thank you for the correction.

Unfortunately, I can't really call you out on much wrong. There is one thing I may want to question; "length depending on note history." I'm pretty sure you understand how the bans work, but we the 3 > 24 > 72 times for ban lengths. Normally if someone has a 3-hour ban for a certain problem, you'd move the next one to 24-hours. You seem to understand this though.

I'd like to say that I think your answer for number 15 is perfectly fine don't listen to El Defaultio up there :cutewink: It's a good idea to always try to understand what happened before you place bans, and even more-so for job-bans. I'd give a one-time warning over the matter and job-ban if it comes up again. This is for if it seems like they're making some stupid plays with Larva, mostly because Xeno are 50% of the server gameplay and some newer players may not understand they shouldn't be on the front lines as Larva. Obviously, sometimes players may burst somewhere inside the FoB or not have a full understand of the map and get lost and die from this, so we don't want to punish people for this.

Overall, I'd vote this a +1 for sure. Clearly, you made sure to read up on the rules and everything while making this so you have what it takes to join as a mod.

Edit: Actually, I do have a question. You seem like a pretty new player, never seen you and your account is still pretty new. When did you first start playing on the server?

For above -

The question is clearly "You see a xeno larva run to the frontline and die"

There's not much to understand here besides the fact they ran towards the frontlines, which is a jobban.

If a larva dies while chest bursting that's completely fine but a mature larva dying on the frontline isn't the same.

And for the situation I posted, pretty much what SLC said. But I can't blame you for getting it wrong.

Well, the length depending on note history would work like that. I wasn't fully sure about your modus operandi when it comes to ban length duration so instead of getting it wrong, I merely referred to it as an escalation in punishment depending on former infractions.

As far as my play time, I believe I started playing on CM around late July if I'm not mistaken. I joined the forums because I decided to interact a bit more with the community. I do play CM quite regularly.

From what I've seen of Cairath they're a good player who can roleplay well, and also play well. Think I've been a little side-tracked by moderating to get involved in-game with them very much recently, but definitely from prior experience I can tell you they're a capable player. Their application is actually really quite good, certainly better than the one I had when I threw mine out there.

I think you'd be a good choice for trial moderator. Of course there's rough corners to deal with - of which specifically has been brought up and spoken about by El Defaultio, SLC and Emeraldblood already - that's exactly why we have trial periods. It's uh, a pretty useful time to get the hang of pretty unique scenarios and some of the weirdest adminhelps you can possibly not imagine.

Good luck with the application, but I think you've got it down pretty well for the most part. Go over the staff protocols again unless you've already done so, they're pretty much common sense but they're what we run by and people like to try and jump you on a staff complaint over something pretty ridiculous at times.
Plays as Eric Penton.

Just thought I'd throw out three easy questions relating to post round.

The round ends, and the Commander field executes someone, what do you do?

The round ends, and a planned execution happens, what do you do?

The round ends, and someone gets tazed for shooting a window, what do you do?

All three cases are cases of End of Round Grief, as they all generate combat logs. In the last case, both the person that shot the window (if they did it after round end) and the person that tased them are guilty of EORG. They would all receive a 3 hour ban, as they all caused combat logs to appear.

For number 3, shooting objects after the round generally isn't bannable, only shooting other players since we don't get combat logs for that.

For 7. In the old system have the medic close up the wound to prevent excessive bleeding while he finds a doctor, but this is nit picking with the new skill system.

Everyone else covered 15.

Answers look well researched and Cairath is a good player. +1

I've seen you around quite a bit in game which is good, a few of your answers in post were a little wonky but I think that you do understand the how and why. I don't think I can go into anything more that hasn't already been touched upon by the people prior so I'll leave my message fairly short.
