Skysoldier - Moderator Application

Post by Skysoldier » 10 Sep 2017, 12:43

Byond ID: Skysoldier

Colonial Marines Character: Musica Hamlio

Age: 19

Gender: Male

Timezone: UTC+10

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? 20Hrs+

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
No direct experiences.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
No

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
Currently I don't play on other major servers, I do play on really small server called daedalus of freedom occasionally.

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
https://www.colonial-marines.com/viewto ... 41&t=14473 Commander Whitelist Application

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
No

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
I have not been banned on the server.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?
I don't believe I have been banned in any server ever.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
Yes, used multiple times in sorts of national wide team competitions, I understand how to use it.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
I would firstly PM the player in question asking for the clarification of the situation and whilst the player is answering me, I'll investigate the player and the situation through notes and logs. After assessing the situation through talking and investigating the notes and logs, I'll decide on what to do. If the situation was a misfire, and is seen to be genuine I'll just let it slide and let the arresting situation carry on in IC, and note it, however if they have prior notes and they 'claim' it as misfire I will issue 3hrs to 24hrs ban depending on the severity of the notes. If the situation was intentional, I'll inform the player of the rule and issue a ban depending on their notes, 3hrs with no prior case to 72hrs with multiple notes and maybe filing for perma ban.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
Check on which type of breach this is, whether this is intentional or not. If the breach is caused by dropship or predator explosion, leave it be as IC issue, however if it is caused by a player depending on situation I will act accordingly. For player caused breaches, PM the player, determine whether it is intentional or not. For intentional breaches, check the notes, remind them of the rules and apply ban according to the notes from 24 hrs to 72hrs, note the case, seal the breach if possible. For unintentional breaches, seal it up, remind them of the rule and possibly the reason of the breach, and leave it off with a warning but note the case, if they have prior case however, apply 24hrs ban.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
Check the player, then report to any available mentors and ask if they can advise the player, if they are busy or there is no one on, PM the player and check if they are new to whole SS13, if so teach the very basics and link the marine's quick starter guide, and additionally check for naming rules, etc, if they are just new to the server link the marine guide. If they are just lost for some reason, link the Almayer map.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
Firstly ask the player to keep the conversation civil, and remind them of rule #1 and then refer to available admin+ member, if they are not available try to contact one, if one cannot be found, inform as such and try to refer to the forums. If they continue to be rude, apply a 3hrs ban and leave a note, unless they have prior notes. This can differ depending on the reason why he is asking to speak to admin+ staff member.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
Assuming that there is no prior notes of this behaviour, politely inform the player that the staff might have overlooked it for some time, refer to the rule and ask for the name change by next round, change the name to acceptable name of their choice if possible. If this occurs again I would contact the player, inform them of the rule again, and apply a 3hr ban and leave a note accordingly. If they have recent note of this behaviour, inform them that they have broken the naming rule again and apply 3hr ban and note the situation.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
I see this as a IC issue and does not require any intervention, unless the said maintenance tech has broken any other rules.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
As of the skills update, the squad medics are unable to perform surgery, however if it were possible I would check their notes for similar cases, pm them and inform that they are breaking the meta gaming rule and warn them to stop, if they do not follow apply ban according to the severity of the notes and note the occurrence.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I do not know what tools moderators are given to ICly communicate to players, but I would try to inform the current marine-side commander that there are small amount of ailens or discreetly message some form of cryptic subliminal message like 'feel as if you can win the battle'

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
PM and Inform that this does not violate the EORG rule, and explain as such as it is only relevant when friendly forces hurt each other as I understand that EORG rule only matters if log is generated, which is from interaction between hostile players only.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
Investigate the situation and discern whether this is a blatant griefing or not, if it isn't, leave it as a IC issue as long this does not cause breaches of any other rules, however if this persist for extended amount of time undisturbed, then PM the player that he is violating rule #1 and ask them to stop and note the case, if this persist after warning apply 3hrs ban and note the case. If it is blatant griefing then PM the player that they are breaching rule #7 apply at least 24hrs ban according to notes, note the case.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
Check the notes on the killer, if no prior notes PM the said player, heavily warn that this is improper escalation, note the case, if possible aheal the affected player. If there are prior notes, PM the player, inform that this is another case of improper escalation, apply ban according to the severity of the notes, note the case, heal the affected players.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
Determine the nature of the situation, check if there are Admin+ staff members on the server, if so, inform them of such, if there isn't, try to contact one, if there aren't any available, remedy the situation to best of my abilities.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
Inform the player that somewhat casual racist remarks are allowed, check the logs, and keep a eye out on the situation. If the situation escalates then announce to players to stop the remarks and and handle the situation depending on the outcome.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
Quickly check the situation, if possible aheal the affected players, check the notes on the player and apply at least 72hrs ban, note the case and file for perma ban.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
Check the situation, and act accordingly. If the larva was hatched from live host in vicinity of hostiles, ignore the case. If this is found to be intentional check the notes and PM the player, check the logs to see whether this is repeated, warn the player if this was done once with no prior cases, and note it. Otherwise apply at least 3hrs ban according to severity depending on the note and situation, note the case.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
Depends on the severity of the situation, if it is minor and occasional, ignore the situation, if it is severe and is being actively incited, announce of the rule that they have to act like xenomorphs, and doing such is not being one, not sure what to actively do if this escalates past this point.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
Refer to xeno rule that "Hivemind is the English translation of a Xeno's thoughts", and say that it is fine to say it as such.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
quickly check notes of the said player, then Inform the command staff player in question that this is metagaming, if there is no prior case note the case and leave it was warning, if there is apply 3hrs ban, note the case and have another command staff member take over briefing.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
Check the logs of the players in question and pm both of the players whether the situation was correctly played out, if this was well role played, treat it as IC situation, if it was not depending on the note, warn the killer or apply 3hrs ban, note the case.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
Quickly look up the rule in question to check whether the said staff member is truly incorrect and my interpretation of it isn't, if so discuss with the fellow staff member on the rule.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
Try to talk to the staff member in question, check whether it is truly abusing his powers, if it is, attempt to revert the changes, then inform the senior staff members.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
I am not exactly sure what to do, the ooc doesn't exactly last long and if it won't extend onto PMs, I would just entirely ignore it, or light trash talk back, or this might just be a banter and I might get along with it, either way this shouldn't impact anything in most cases. If somehow I believe this to be severe somehow I would inform them of rule #1.

Any additional information you'd like to add?
Not much, I am just applying because I've come to somewhat respect the staff members and the community, and I'd like to help the low-pop times I am usually in.

Also this just might be me but I am finding less stuff to actually write about as the questions go on...

1. Good, but how would you determine it was a misfire? as in, what would you be looking for in the logs?
2. Fair
3. Good, but it may be an idea to ping for mentors on slack

Could you elaborate on this?
5. Moderators cannot change names, otherwise good
6. Spot on.
7. Good

In regards to this one, we do have some tools available, such as sending SM's (submliminal messages), or replying to Fax's. You dont want to give IC information, in regards to amounts of aliens/ locations.
9. Good
10. Fair, but perhaps SM the MP's that its their job to stop this kind of thing, before taking direct action.
11. Ok
12. Ok
13. Good
14. When filing for a perma, standard ban is 7 days, which is usually about the time a perma takes to be processed, otherwise ok
15. How would you determine this was intentional? What if this wasnt the first note this player had for a similar situation?
Minor nitpicking also, but im going to point out that the situation states that they run towards the frontlines, and that you've seen it.
16. Fair
17. Correct, calling it anything else, whilst nice, is just fluff
18. Ok

Going to ask you to provide a basic example, also, whats this note you mention?
20. Ok
20a. Good. Quick question, who would you report the incident to, for example, which senior staff for a mod, and which for an admin?
21. Good

By my experiences of seeing misfires, it usually comes with only single/one burst shot and profusely apologising to the affected party, I would look interaction between the players in chat with the logs, this coupled with the PMs, I assume I should be able to assess whether this is misfire or not.
Jaketeaking wrote:

4. Could you elaborate on this?
I can't really think of multiple scenarios regarding with this, but I was thinking of different attitude and actions depending on whether the said player was trying to contact admin+ for some sorts of rule violation or bugs, or just trying to contact them for shit talking or jokes/banter.

So I'm assuming I can't do some sort of general announcement, and fax is situational on whether they actually send a fax/USCM message, I assume I would likely need to do a subliminal message to acting commander that they should go down.

Oh right, I was assuming if the situation wasn't resolved for extended amount of time that meant MPs are either excessively busy or nonexistent, if they are there and/or not doing their job I'll attempt to message them.

Understood, so I'm guessing the standard ban time for any 'extreme' rule violations start at 7 days?

Minor nitpicking also, but im going to point out that the situation states that they run towards the frontlines, and that you've seen it.
When I check the logs and see if this was a repeated case for the particular player I would determine this was intentional, and if this was a one-off thing this would on the PM and depending on the situation I saw of the larva going into battlefield - like hatching in hydro, coming out and finding out there were marines rushing in immediate vicinity and dying, or blatantly running up to a barricade with marines around it.
As for prior note case and assuming I find it to be intentional, I would apply at least a 24hrs ban and probably a xeno role ban if possible.

19. Going to ask you to provide a basic example, also, whats this note you mention?
With a case of fighting on the evac pod, I assume the situation will be mostly chaotic with the xenos boarding most of the time, but generally I expect to see some kind of talking, into struggle of some sort of melee, and into using guns at latest. Or just generally not shooting someone in the face the moment they get into the pod.
Also with the note, I'm guessing this counts as a part of improper escalation?

I would assume I would contact the head admin/senior admin for a admin, and head moderator/senior moderator for a moderator.

Hello Skysoldier,

I don't remember seeing you in game, but I like the app, answers are good.

I see no reason why you wouldn't do well as a mod, so have a +1.

I've seen them in game quite a lot and they've always struck me as a competent role player, I've never had to deal with them in terms of rule breaking issues and the application looks good! I'll give it a +1.

Good app. Very active player. Seen your IC character quite often, and competent enough at RP. I really want to see how you fare as part of our mod team. +1

Okay, so I'm a little short of time so excuse such a short post, but this looks good. Your answers are pretty level-headed and I know for a fact you're active in-game, roleplay well and for the majority of cases you don't salt up deadchat.

Some advice, I recommend going in as MP for a few rounds and get a good handle of Marine Law and some experience on how dicey it can get unless you're already pretty well up-to-date with it. Lot of adminhelps regarding Marine Law flood in and it's useful to give people a definite answer, and getting it sorted out for them if it's serious. Most difficult thing at the start is probably deciding when something's IC or when it's OOC, but over-all looks good to me.

If someone else's got the time to run over final details that'd be handy, and any players reading this who've got something to put in, please do. I support this application being put through.
Plays as Eric Penton.

Thanks for the support guys, I think MP/Marine Laws are 'somewhat' of a weak point for me so I've been reading up on it and trying MPs currently.

Other then that, I'd appreciate if there is any more guide/criticism for this.

I've seen Musica a lot in game, often playing support roles like RO and staff officer and being at least a decent RP-er. I've also handled a lot of their ahelps, and they seem like a responsible, mature person OOCly.

Not much I can say about the app that hasn't been said already. It's good.
