Frozentsbgg - Moderator Application

Post by frozentsbgg » 23 Sep 2017, 14:05

Byond ID: Frozentsbgg

Colonial Marines Character: Alex Olaf and Tucker "Shit Leader" McGee

Age: 17

Gender: Male

Timezone: GMT +8 (Honk Kong/Malaysia)

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
During term time, I usually am not able to give as much towards SS13 ( Specifically CM) as I'd like. On a good week, I typically play for one or two hours a night during the week, and on weekends that usually shoots up to around 3-4. During the week, I'd like to say I could spend between 12-14 hours moderating, while also playing a little bit in between.During the Holidays, I tend to spend a lot more time playing games, which would mean I'd have more time to dedicate towards Moderating.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
I've never held any positions of Staff in a Space Station 13 server. However, I've had extensive experience as a DarkRP admin for the Urban Gamers DarkRP server from early 2015, to December last year, as I stepped away due to a lack of interest. I also help run a Discord for a small youtuber, not sure if that counts.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
Nope!

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
Apart from CM, I solely play on Paradise.

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
N/A Since I don't have any other CM apps.

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
Nope.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
Nope.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?
Nope.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
Yes, I used to use it for a Arma Clan.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
Since the MP's have detained the player, the issue has been "resolved" In character, meaning I can leave the MP's to their own devices. However, I'd keep an eye on the MP's investigation, and what the Player says to excuse him randomly shooting people at the round start. While the MP's are "Interrogating" and doing the IC investigation, I'd go through the Players notes and warns to see if he has a history of Shooting fellow Marines. If the MP's IC investigation didn't give me a satisfying reason to why he randomly shot the marines, or his notes and warns suggested this was a repeat occurrence, I'd PM the Players directly and try to ascertain why he did it. If necessary, I'd also PM the Marines that were shot by him to figure out their side of the story. If I wasn't satisfied with the Players response and believed that his actions were intended to grief, I'd give him a Note and Warn, and a short ban (3 hours). If however, the Player was a repeat offender, I'd likely give him a Note and Warn, but a significantly longer ban (12 hours).

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
My First Priority would be figuring out if the breach was Invalid (Player Made), or a Valid breach (DropShip). I'd immediately investigate the source of the Breach, by checking the logs to determine its source. If the breach was Invalid, which would be shown by a players action resulting in the breach, I'd quickly plug the hole, and Ahealing all injured or killed by the Breach. After the breach is plugged and the players healed, I'd PM the Player as well as checking out his Notes and Warns, to figure out the circumstances surrounding the breach, such as if it was intentional, and the player's history. If the breach was accidental, and he had no prior history, I'd likely give him a stern Warning both through PM, and give a Note on his Player record. If however, the breach intentional, and the player did so to grief, or the player has had a history of Breaching, I'd likely give him a much harsher warning and note, alongside a 3-hour ban. If I found that the breach was Valid, with the logs saying it was formed as a result of a Dropship Crash Landing, then I'd leave it be, and let the round progress.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
Chances are, since he's Naked and Lost, he's also probably New. I'd check if there were any Mentors on, and ask them to perhaps give him some guidance. If there weren't any Mentors on, I'd hop onto Discord/Slack and ask for one to come give the New Player a Hand. With No Mentors on, i'd take a few minutes to PM the New Player, and give him some guidance on what to do. Regardless of him being helped, I'd keep a small eye on the player, to make sure he doesn't make any stupid Boot mistakes, that are against the server rules.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
I'd try to help the player, while also ignoring the player's attitude. I'd specifically ask him, to calm down and to explain his complaint with me to see if I can change it. If an Admin+ was online, I'd contact them and discuss the player with them privately either in game or in slack, and if they gave their permission, I'd direct the player to them. Regardless of if the Admin+ Wishes to speak to the Player, I'd direct the Player to the CM Forums, so that he can lodge his complaint. If however, the player continues to rudely spam Admin help and ignores instructions to stop, I'd warn the player, and make a note about it, before if necessary muting him from Admin helps.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.

I'd check the Players Notes to see if a Previous Staff member has made an exception to a Naming Rules, or if the Player has previously had trouble regarding the Naming Rules. I'd then ask the player to change his name for the next round, linking the Naming Rules as well as explaining the Rules, and how over time they change. I'd lastly add a note the Player detailing the Naming Offense. If the player decides to ignore this request and keeps their name that is against the rules i'd Warn and note the player, before giving a 3-hour ban.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
I'd start by checking the Players Notes, to see if he has a history of griefing. I'd then let the situation Pan out as This is a mostly IC issue, and the MP's online should resolve it. I'd still keep an eye on the MT to make sure he doesn't decide to start griefing or breaking any other rules. If the MP's seem incompetent towards cracking down during code green, I'd SM the Warrant Officer (or the head MP), reminding them to ensure that Law is being upheld on the Alamo. Unless they seem really incompetent, I wouldn't directly call the MT out, and even then I'd just say something along the lines of: "Please ensure your MP's check out [Area which the MT might be found]". If however, there were no MP's on, I'd SM him, reminding him to observe Ship Law, and if he fails to comply I'd PM him before the warning and noting him.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Pretending that new Skills System doesn't exist, I'd start by directly pmming the Player, telling him to end the Incision and halt the surgery at once. After the surgery is halted, I'd check the Players Notes before explaining to him that those medics aren't allowed to perform surgery. I'd advise the player to hand the Wounded Marine off to a Doctor shipside. After conversating with the player, I'd add a note to his record and if necessary ( such as with a repeat offender), i'd give him a Medic Job ban, and a 3 hour Game Ban.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The Marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
Using SM's I'd Pressure the Leadership Team to push onto the surface, threatening them with cowardice if they do not! I'd also SM the Corporate Liason, and ask him to provide Corporate Pressure onto the Leadership team to launch an assault on the WY Facility.
I'd also contact the Aliens (The queen if she's alive), and pressure them to make a foothold around the LZs and prepare to assault the USMC forces. I'd lastly encourage the Aliens to plop down some egg sacks and try to find some monkeys or stranded marines to impregnate

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
I'd explain to the Marine, that since the Iron bear is from a Hostile Faction to the USMC, he's entitled to shoot the Marine. Even after the round ends. I'd also explain to the Marine, how this differs from EORG and why an Iron Bear murdering a Marine, is Valid.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.

I'd leave the Marine be, but keep an eye on him, in case he does anything that breaks the rules. This is an IC issue, that the MP's should be resolving. If the MP's are being useless, I'd send an SM to them or the WO, telling them to keep an eye on things, similarly to Question 6. If there are no MP's around, I'd also try SMing the Marines SL, to see if the SL can try to "Incentivise" the marine to stop. Last but not least, I'd PM the marine and warn him to stop, giving a note indicating I did.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.

I'd start by checking the KIller Marine's notes to see if the was a repeat offender as well as PMing the dead marine, to gather his side of the story. I'd then talk to the marine, explaining how his decision to murder the other marine, was an invalid proper escalation. I'd proceed to add a note, explaining the situation to the player's record before banning him for 3 hours. If it turned out, that the player was a repeat offender, I'd ban him for 24 hours. Lastly, i'd Aheal the Dead Marine and allow him to continue playing in the round.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
If an Admin+ was online, I'd ask very politely for him/her to give me some help! If all the Admin+'s were offline, I'd post a message in the slack and cry wait for a response.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.

Since this an IC occurring, I'd stay out of it. I would, however, reply to the players Adminhelp and explain to the Player that Minor Racist and Offensive comments are okay to a certain degree. If the Comments become more than "Minor", or the player continues to be offended, I'd PM the Offender privately, and ask him to tone it down.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.

Since the Griefer has Disconnected, I'd start by posting a message in OOC stating that the situations being taken care of and that you can stop sending Ahelps about it. I'd then proceed to Aheal those injured in the shooting. I'd then go onto the players notes, checking if he has a history of griefing. I'd add a note stating the incident before giving the Griefer a week ban, with a request for Permaban if he was a repeat offender. I'd also post in the Slack, telling other Staff Members about the incident and the player involved.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
I'd start by checking the players logs, to see if he's Suicide ran in the past to escape being a Xeno. I'd then PM both the Larva, and the Larva's killer to try understand how the Larva died. If the Larva's excuse for Suicide running was that he didn't want to play Xeno, I'd explain to the player that they can simply ghost if they don't want to play Xeno. I'd then warn the player and add a note to their record. If the player was new and died by accident, this was likely a rookie mistake and i'd give the player some basic Xeno tips for the next round. If the Larva turned out to be a repeat offender I'd give him a Xeno job ban with a 3-hour game ban.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
I'd give the Xeno a Strong Warning in PM, and remind him of the recent announcement regarding stronger enforcement. I'd give the Xeno a warning and a note on their player record. If the Xeno continued to meme, I'd give him a 3-hour Ban without warning as well as adding the Note onto their record detailing the ban.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
I'd explain to the Ahelping Xeno, that Xeno's don't RP chat is a literal English translation of the Alien HiveMind, and therefore it's okay to call the Metal Bird a "dropship".

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
I'd let the briefing continue. This happens surprisingly oftern during the weekdays on low pop rounds. Usually, the mention of something Meta is so small, no one notices it, but most other times, the Marines just ignore it, or jerk help the Command Staffer out by "Correcting" his mistake. Neitherless, after Briefing has ended, I'd PM the Command Staffer and check their notes, and remind him about MetaGaming, and specifically that they have no knowledge of the aliens. I'd give the Command Staffer a note stating that I reminded them for Metagaming. If the Commander Staffer was a repeat Meta-Offender, i'd warn the Command Staffer before giving them a 3 hour Ban, and a Command Job Ban if necessary, I'd then add another note to his record detailing the ban.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.

I'd PM the Killer, the Victim as well as any witnesses to ask them to give their rendition of what happened. I'd crosscheck this with the Logs, to piece together if this was RPed correctly, and if the Escalation was valid. I'd also check the notes of the killer, to see if he was a repeat offender. If the Killer RPed the situation, and they both escalated the RP in a valid manner, I'd stay out of it. If however, there was no RP, or the escalation was invalid, I'd apply a note to the killer's record, before giving him a 24 Hour Ban. I'd lastly Aheal the Victim, and allow him to continue in the Evacuation.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
I'd contact the Fellow Staffer in Slack/Discord or in PM, in a friendly manner asking them to explain a decision they made and attempting to politely explain how you disagree with that decision. If done correctly, it can be a learning experience for both.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.

Gather Evidence of the Abuse via Screenshots and Logs. I'd try to talk to the Fellow Staff Member informally in Slack/Discord or in PM about the event, before reporting it to SLC and asking him to resolve it.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.

WHAT THE HECK DID YOU SAY TO ME

I'd ignore them.

Any additional information you'd like to add?

I know my lack of posting on the forums is likely to raise some concern! Rest Assured, I plan to be more active in the future. I've honestly just been lurking :)

Hi, your app is really good, I enjoyed many of your answers and your logic on how to deal with it is pretty spot on. When it comes to modding, it's very subjective, everyone has their own methods and ways of enforcing rules. As long as you're doing it right, that's fine by me.

With that being said, there are 2 situation responses I'd like to give input and criticism:
2: Your answer is indeed correct, however, your first priority regardless of what caused the breach, is to fix the breach. Even if the breach is caused by the game itself, xenos could literally just hide in a vented zone to survive the entire game and marines could never touch them. That's obviously an issue for game progression. So yeah, other than that, great answer :].
14. I'd refrain from announcing that, and deal with the issue in ahelp regardless. I don't think it's necessary to announce to everyone that there was an issue in the first place. This is personal preference, and of course, it's entirely up to you on what you do. If you feel it's appropriate, go for it. Good answer again, no issue otherwise.

Good luck on your application, I think you'd make a good mod!

Hello Frozentsbgg,

Blah blah blah low forum activity.

__
A few questions on your answers :

2. Are all player made breaches invalid? Are there valid breaches not caused by the dropship? Isn't 3h for intentionally breaching the ship, massively disrupting the round in a way that is clearly stated as forbidden in the rules lenient?

4. Meeeh, do you really need to bother the admin by PMing him? He's probably busy. You'll know what issues require admin+ abilities, and a player asking to speak to them isn't.

6. Why do you PM the MT to tell him to "observe ship law"? The rules don't force you to follow marine law do they?

11. Would you ban him if it's his first offence ever? Also, "invalid proper escalation", made me smile.

12. Good call, they can smell your tears.

19. 24h ban, even if it's his first offense?
__

You seems to have a tendency to PM other staff members alot. Might just be the sociopath in me talking, or your lack of experience with the discussion tools at our disposal, but you rarely ever need to PM anyone about day to day issues like ahelps.

Very good applications, you seem to have all the required qualities to be a mod, solid +1.

Thanks for reading.
Player PM from player/(Larva (247)) (?): It's totally realistic to challenge someone to do boxing for a mouse trap, in the middle of a alien occupation.

Hey Man! Thanks for the feedback and the reply :) I'm fairly certain it's a mix between the lack of experience and your Sociopathic Tendencies!
I'll go ahead and break down each question/point you brought up in an attempt to answer them.

2. A Preds Gauntlet going Kablam would be an example of a Valid Breach. Your point about the Length of the ban is true, and I think it depends on a player's past history and the context, and how many people were injured. Would a 24-hour ban be more applicable due to many players dying in the scenario?

4. Thanks! Would directing them to the forums be a safer bet than angering the Admin+ gods?

6. Although Marine Law isn't enforceable, you could send an SM/PM to the player Reminding them instead of Ordering them. For Example "The voice inside your head draws back to a MT Briefing, and how You aren't entitled a Gun On Code Green" instead of "Drop dat firearm at once or ding dong bannu Maintantnce Technican"

11. I think in this situation, a 3-hour ban is suitable to a Player with no previous history. Murdering another Marine takes them out of the round, and is something that needs to be punished, especially if it's his first offense. Glad I made you smile, I giggled a little bit while writing it!

12. Better Cry Harder Then!

13. Perhaps a 3-hour Ban would be a better choice unless the player had a previous history :)

Thanks again for the Feedback Tharinoma!

I want some clarification on a few more things from you:

1. What if there isn't an MP there to deal with the issue? What if it was an accident and the shot marine starts punching the one who fired, and what if they fire back? What if the one who fired in the first place started doing so again in self defense, and leaves the marine that was initially shot in crit or dead? What if other marines joined in and started attacking the marine who fired, the issue growing out of hand?
At what point do you feel that staff is needed, and what should be done exactly?

6. Why do you feel the need for intervention here? If the MT isn't causing harm or outright griefing, what exactly is he doing that warrants notice from the staff?

15. Someone not wanting to play a certain role is a good enough excuse to you for suicide? A larva is a valuable resource for the aliens, to commit suicide by being in the front is outright griefing since it takes away a chance from a player who COULD play and is little more than an attempt to harm the aliens. Why do you feel a warning would be particularly effective against the kind of player who would rather remove a role existing at all instead of making an ahelp or ghosting?

19. This can depend on how much has occurred IC. What should the punishment be if there was no real interaction? What if the one who was attacked was trying to stop the marine from evacuating but not actually using physical force for it and were just talking ? What if they're just trying to push the marine down to stop them or are in the way of the pod and the marine responds with lethals when he's prevented from leaving while there's no threat near them yet?

As an aside of other things you should be aware of, you can talk in the slack or use msay for the moderator channel in game to consult with those online if you need help instead of outright PMing them and notes are made when you ban someone so you simply place the note as the ban reason.

Hey Frozentsbgg, not sure if we met in game before but thanks for the application.

It's overall well researched, and you have a really good understanding of what is required. Are you at all familiar with admining in byond? (Don't worry, I was completely new to it too when I started).

What are you plans for becoming more active on the forums if you are accepted?

Finally, just some criticism:

2. a 24 hour ban would probably be sufficient, although a 3 day ban would be appropriate as there were a bunch of players affected.

5. Don't forgot to mention how to appeal for a name if they want to argue for it.

6. Mostly an IC issue. As long as he isn't actively using it and blasting a bunch of things you don't need to go to the point of sm-ing the mt.

8. Mods do get access to the queen mother report

9. You've mixed up the scenario. The Iron Bear is the one ahelping against the marine, but the justification is still valid.

12. All tears must be collected for processing by the admin team.

18. That's alright, but what if the marines begin to go along with his briefing?

19. remember our general guideline for escalating bans- 3 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days.

21. Remember that we are a volunteer group. While comments like that can generally be ignored- remember that we are not payed to be abused.

Hi Solarmare and Tidomann,
Thank you both for your feedback and responses :)

I'd like to just break down your individual points and try to respond to them as best as I can!
Solarmare:

1) Hmm, This is a tricky one. From my point of view, FF is a common occurrence, and marines should be /used/ to the risk of FF, and have the knowledge not to retaliate.
That's not to say they shouldn't RP anger, but more they should show restraint. Answering your question though, I think a staffer should step in if the Player that was shot begins to severely injure the other player, or if the group begins to start to injure the shooting player. However, If the group remains verbal, or the Marine Retaliating does so in a way which doesn't severely injure the player ( such as punching him). If I did need to break it up, I'd probably have to resort to sleeping the Marine who was retaliating, before warning them both and adding a note to their record. For the group, depending on how many members the group had, an OOC notice might be necessary.

6) As I said to another Staffer, an SM might be more appropriate in this situation or even no interference at all, unless he starts to grief.

15) I think you misunderstood my Answer in my App. My answer was primarily punishing the player, and explaining to him that suicide running ain't okay. I explicitly said that someone not wanting to play the role Isn't alright. I think the warning also only works for a player without a History. With a player that has done it before, a much harsher punishment (such as a 3-hour ban, or a Job Ban), is 100% necessary

19) I completely agree that it all revolves around how much has occurred IC. If the Marine had no Interaction and straight up murderboned the player out of the blue, I'd probably resort to giving a 3/24 hour ban depending on the player's history. For your other questions, it's a question of if the disagreement was escalated correctly. If the Marine responded to verbal denial by just shooting the other player, i'd likely punish it.
Your last scenario probably the highest, and I'd have to say I'd probably warn the Marine or give him a 3-hour ban considering I still don't feel as if the situation was correctly escalated.

Thanks for all the questions hope I cleared some of them up.

On to Tidomann!
I don't think we have met in game :) but none the less, it is nice to meet you. Since you've only posted a few questions I'll just answer them in a paragraph.

I'll be blunt. I've go no experience in Byond admining, but i'd be more than willing to learn :) I also plan to become significantly more active on the forums, regardless of if I was accepted or not! I plan to get involved in the USMC subforum specifically, probably try to pass on some of my Medical Tips!

Thanks for your feedback as well, I wasn't aware of Mods having access to the Queen Mother Report :) and I'll keep in mind the Volunteer nature of the group, and the general Escalating ban scheme!

:) Thank you, both of you!

I really like your application, from what I've seen you've taken a lot of time to read over the questions do some research and answer appropriately and it shows.

There are a few smaller issues that I would point out but I think that Tharinoma and Tidomann pretty much got to everything I wanted to mention.

I'd be quite happy to give you a +1 as I think you've comfortably got a grasp of the rules and the things you don't know initially can be cleared up with help, else I'm pretty sure you'd be able to find out the information you needed to as you come across as being quite capable. I'm quite fond of the humour as it shows that you've grown accustomed to some of the nuances in the community, which shows genuine interest which again is pretty good.

Mm, then one more note on 15 for you would be, it's fine to warn a player if you think they'll stop their behavior. In most cases, however what you'll see is they join as a larva, die as one, and log off.
What do you feel is appropriate then to stop this behavior when they can't even be PMed?

Aside from that you have everything you need to know covered and the rest you'll learn more or mess, so I'd you a +1 for the application.

Pretty busy so I can't give you a full run-down, but not bad. You have a few problems I may go into detail later, but to touch a few points now:

14. Try not to use OOC unless you're getting flooded with a lot of ahelps about it or it's caused another OOC problem (other than the actual problem). Remember that even Xeno players see it as well as everyone not involved so it can make a small rift in the game-flow, but this isn't a bad answer.
18. No, you don't just let this slide. It's a direct breach of the rules and as such, you need to correct this.
20a. Don't PM the offender over slack to try to like fix this yourself. There isn't anything you'd need to be talking to them about regarding them abusing their powers. Just turn the information into a head and let them deal with it. Not saying you can't talk to them on a personal level, but you don't need to be PMing them about, "I'm turning you in for abusing your powers. Anything you have to say for yourself?"

As I said, I'm pretty busy so I probably won't be able to get a reply in today. I'll stay neutral on this until I can look into it deeper but you seem to have what it takes to work as a mod and nothing being a trial mod can't fix.

I'm late to all of these. Heyo, your application has a lot of effort put into it which I like, it shows you're serious about this. Pretty much all my concerns have been addressed by the other moderators, and I don't have any to throw out myself because of that. Never seen your name around probably because of the timezones, seems you've been on the server for about three months here.

I'm liking the application overall, if you're accepted then welcome to your new personal hell of salt production.

Edit: Oh, yeah, this question on the application form isn't applicable anymore because of our skills system, but what level of a player's history would require an additional squad medic job-ban and timed-ban in 7. in your opinion? In this situation are you applying them both at the same time for this repeat offender? For 16. that's pretty good, shows you're up-to-date with things.

Lastly, the reason the reply to 1. is off is because it specifies the marine shot someone else randomly at round-start. Essentially, implying they shot someone around or before briefing for no particular reason. I wouldn't consider it IC in that case unless it was a misfire as it's more likely someone either new and confused clicking around everywhere with a gun or someone trying to get away with killing someone.

In the above case what punishment time would you recommend for someone who intentionally attempted to kill someone else at round-start with no justification?
Plays as Eric Penton.
