Sirlordington - Moderator Application

Post by Sir Lordington » 19 Nov 2017, 09:37

Byond ID: Sirlordington

Colonial Marines Character: Luke Compton

Age: 19

Gender: M

Timezone: Central European Time

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? About two hours per day on weekdays, five or so on Saturdays and Sundays, variable during exam periods.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? Not in a moderating capacity.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? No.

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM? Baystation. I pop into /tg/ very rarely,

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
CO - viewtopic.php?f=142&t=14971

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? No.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? No.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for? No.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? I know how it works.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.

Check the shooter's notes, PM both players for their sides, and have a quick look at the logs to determine whether it was intentional griefing or just an accident. If it was an accident, tell them how to switch a weapon's safety on and leave it as an IC issue. If it was griefing, apply a note and a 3 hour ban.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.

Determine the cause, logdive if necessary. If it was a predator Self-Destruct or a Dropship Crash, leave it be. If a weird bug caused it, fix it and heal anyone who died. If a player caused it intentionally, fix it, heal anyone affected, check the note history of whoever caused it, PM them and apply at least a 24 hour ban, extendable to 7 days and filing for perma if their note history is worrying enough (say, if they've done it before, or if they are a notorious griefer)

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.

Check for any online mentors and inform them of the situation. If there are no Mentors available then I would PM him myself and ask whether he needs any help. Answer his questions and link the Marine Quickstart Guide as well as the pages for his role.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.

Remind him that staff is here to help and ask him to keep things civil. Meanwhile, I'd check if there are any Admin+ staffers available and inform them of the situation and that this player wishes to speak to them. If no Admins are available or they insist that I handle the situation myself, I would politely inform the player that no Admin+ staff members are online/available and that I will be handling their case. If, despite this, they continue to be excessively rude I would consider giving them a note and a three hour ban.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.

Explain to them that the name might have gone unnoticed, but he must still change his name as it does not comply with the rules. I would request that they change it in the next round.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.

This is an IC issue for Military Police to deal with.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.

Squad Medics are mechanically unable to perform surgery. Assuming they could, I would check the player's notes to see whether they have a history of metagaming. If they did, then I would apply a note and a 24 hour ban. Otherwise, I would warn them, let them finish the surgery and apply a note.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?

I would subtle message the Marine Commander with something along the lines of "We seem to be winning. It may be time to switch to a more aggressive strategy."

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.

I would explain to the Iron Bear player that End of Round Grief only applies to combat between members of the same team. Iron Bears are hostile to marines and therefore combat between marines and Iron Bears may continue even after the round ends.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.

The way I imagine the situation it sounds like an IC issue to be handled by MPs. If it got truly ludicrous, like beating another marine into crit, then I would check the logs to see if this is absolutely random or part of RP, check their notes for similar past behaviour, and apply a note and a three hour ban if this is not an isolated incident.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.

PM both players and ask for their sides of the story. If it is true, then inform the player who killed the other marine of Improper Escalation rules and check their notes. If this is the first such incident, give them a warning and a note and leave it at that. If it's not the first time something similar happens, apply a 24 hour ban. Heal the dead marine.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.

Check for any Admin+ staff online. If none are there then ask for Admin assistance on slack.

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.

Inform the player that minor IC racism is allowed. Remind him that characters are different from the players behind them and that while it is unfortunate that he felt offended, it is all part of Roleplay and none of it is aimed at him.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.

I would check their notes, apply a new one along with a seven day ban and file for perma. Heal anyone damaged by the incident.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.

From the way this is worded, it seems like a Larva who was safely at the backlines ran towards the front and committed suicide. Whatever the case, I would PM them and ask why they did it, as well as check their notes for similar infractions. If this is not the first time or their explanation is unconvincing (and I would check logs to confirm their story if possible) then I would jobban them fron xeno. If they had a good reason then I would warn them that suicide as a larva is a serious offence and apply a note.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.

Warn them that this is extremely low RP and request that they stop. Note that they have been warned. Apply a three hour ban if they continue or if it is not the first incident.

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".

Explain to that player that the alien chat is simply an English translation of the hivemind and what is being communicated are actually ideas and therefore while some people may elect to call it "metal bird" it is not against the rules to refer to things by their common marine names.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.

Assuming he was referring to the Xenos, I would PM them and inform them that Marines have no knowledge about the aliens at roundstart and check their notes. If this is the first incident, then I would simply warn and note. If they have a history of metagaming, however, I would issue a command job ban.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.

PM both players, as well as any witnesses for their side of the story and check the logs to see whether it was actually roleplayed as opposed to simply wordlessly shooting someone. If it was roleplayed then I would leave it as an IC issue and inform the player who was shot that if roleplayed correctly this is a valid action. Otherwise a note and a three hour ban should suffice.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.

I would inform the staffer through msay that the information or enforcement may be incorrect and politely tell them what I believe is the correct information/action for them to correct themselves if they so wish.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.

I would take screenshots, note the time and any other relevant information, then inform their senior staff member via slack.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.

Ignore it, it's just trash talk.

Any additional information you'd like to add?
Nothing I can think of.

Compton is a competent Commander and player so no character objections from random baldie ol' me.

One thing though, because 19 is always a question that's irked me a bit. What would be acceptable roleplay if the pods are about to go off when the exchange happens? I've seen cases where there were literal seconds until the pods launched, and it's hard to do roleplay when that's the case - or worse, when the Xenos are almost there. Would simply saying out loud "I wanna live, get out!" count as proper roleplay in this case?

There's a lot of situations and it has to be judged in a case by case basis, but a few criteria I would use are:
-If the killed player consents then there is no issue.
-The pod must be full, or the killed person must have been actively stopping the killer from entering the pod.
-The situation must be pressing. There must be no other pods in the immediate area, or xenos must be right on the killer's tail in such a way that there is no other feasible option than to kill the person occupying the pod.

These are all reasonable. Take my +1

Hello Sirlordington,

A very good application, and I've never had trouble with you in game. Some of your recent notes could be concerning, I'll let the seniors decide if they're a problem.

Solid +1
Player PM from player/(Larva (247)) (?): It's totally realistic to challenge someone to do boxing for a mouse trap, in the middle of a alien occupation.
AHELP: Player/(Player) : HELP HELP HELP I SAWED SOMEOEN HEAD OFF! I DIDNT MEAN TOO

I appreciate the vote of confidence.

Notes for full disclosure in case non-staff want to know: https://gyazo.com/688ca1d636abe76c289ca8fb45924909

I have a lengthy explanation on the first one in my CO app, I'd encourage anyone who wishes to know more to have a look there but essentially, it was a bad call at the wrong time and I accepted full responsibility.

As for the second one, at the time I believed I had sufficient reason to believe the aliens could control the ship (I had called it up with the queen inside and it went back down while the Queen was in the cockpit with nobody sending it down). I was quickly informed this was not the case and evac should not be called before hijack. I apologised and took note of it.

Overall, two honest mistakes I learned from and take full responsibility for.

Compton is a nice guy and the application is looking good. Good answers and you clearly put effort in it. About the notes, i don't think they really are a problem. The rest can be fixed in the trial period so i think you will be able to do the job. +1

Learned marine law, the rules, and the jobs really fast, with no mistakes along the way as far as I can see.
Give him his trial already, and I say this even though most of the interactions we've had were discussions on the validity of BEs.

Big fat +1

I think SirL is a pretty cool guy. Eh kills shitlers as CO and doesn't afraid of anything.

Memes aside, I'd only keep in mind the usual ban progression. I think he'd be a good mod to have. +1

The whole escape pod portion I think you'll need to adjust your mindset on. It's a HOLY SHIT EVAC MOMENT and fighting for a pod to preserve your life doesn't necessarily need to have consent from the other party. Sometimes you get buckshotted for your escape pod spot.

Answers/replies are good enough for army work.

Application approved for trial mod.
