LocalizedDownpour - Moderator Application

Post by LocalizedDownpour » 04 Feb 2018, 14:28

Byond ID:LocalizedDownpour

Colonial Marines Character: Sepherina Cato

Age:26

Gender:Male

Timezone:Central

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
I play at least one game a day. So at least 21, up to more depending on how many rounds I play each day.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
I've been staff on this server in fact. Though I have been an admin on afew roleplaying sims in Second Life.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
Just this one really.

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
Occasionally Paradise, Lifeweb if I can ever get into it, and Even rarer Hippie.

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
http://colonial-marines.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=16107
(I'm having an issue finding my previous mod app, and I also had a failed pred app as well that I can't seem to locate.)

[Edited Because I don't know how to internet sometimes]
http://colonial-marines.com/viewtopic.p ... ur#p105700
http://colonial-marines.com/viewtopic.p ... our#p68965

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
Nowhere currently.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
Never.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?
Never.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
I have used it with the sever.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each of the following situations. Do not write on the same line as the situation - use the space below it or make space as needed. Failure to do this proves your inability to follow instructions and your application will be automatically denied.

1. A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
I would look into it abit to see why the shooting occured but would ultimately leave it in the hands of the MPs. I would speak with the player and warn about Escalation of Force if necessary, otherwise leave a note about low RP.

2. The ship has a breach to space and a bunch of players have died or are dying as a result.
As far as I understand this is now impossible. Though I have been told Mods have a fix breach verb and would use that to fix the issue. I would also find out who breached the ship and warn them against such actions as needed, and also leave a note.

3. You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost.
I would try to direct a mentor to them, but otherwise this is a RP issue.

4. A player is being very rude to you in Adminhelps and requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
Depending on the nature of their rudeness, and why they were being rude, as well as note history, I would issue a three hour ban and direct them to the forums. While I understand there is a certain tolerance for abuse, and sometimes people just get salty, it's important to know the limit.

5. You notice a player with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules. The player is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, no one has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
Inform them to change it, if they refuse to change it upon the next round. They'll recieve a round ban so they have plenty of time to think of a new name, along with a note. Unless mods now have a verb to randomize names...then I'll do that.

6. You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green with no threat present.
Sleep them. Inform them that that is against the rules, leave a note, and observe them for abit to see if they behave.

7. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Inform them as to the rules on medics and surgery. If he continues then he'll be slept...reminded sternly, and a note left on his account.

8. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
As a mod I'm not really allowed to 'push' the round in any one way. Though perhaps a stern message from USCM or Weyland to get people moving.

9. The round ends, a MARINE starts shooting a hostile IRON BEAR and the IRON BEAR Adminhelps complaining he was killed after the round ended.
UPP are hostile unless it's an admin event. This happenstance is covered in our rules.

10. A marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start.
Check his notes. If it's his first time, warn him and leave a note. If he has a history, he'll get a small temp ban.

11. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
Inform the offending marine of the EoF policy. Check his notes and give him a heafty heafty warning if not a ban depending on notes. Also note the incident regardless.

12. An issue arises that requires Admin+ abilities.
If it absolutely cannot be solved by me I would make a quick mention in Slack and hope for a reply, doing my best to metigate withen my power.a

13. There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
While we do allow minor racism as long as it is RPed out well if it is excessive I might Subtle message them to tone it down or cease.

14. A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
Perma pending ban and I'd put a post up about it, the CKey would also by noted for grief.

15. You see a player playing a xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines and die.
Check their notes for a history. If there is a pattern then xeno ban/recommend for xeno ban. Leave a note on their history regardless.

16. You see a xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat.
Warn him of Xeno LRP, leaving a note of his behavior

17. A xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different xeno player complains to you that it's metagaming/failRP to call it a "dropship".
Hivemind is english translation, calling it a dropship is fine.

18. A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet.
Inform him that this is metagaming. While 99% percent of players will shut them down on this, I would still message them explaining they no nothing of the aliens at round start.

19. A Marine kills another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself.
This is a toeing the line kinda thing but if it was RP'd out I would see it as legit...just scummy.

20. You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforcing a rule.
I would just say something in Msay and let them handle it as opposed to step on toes. Worst case talk about it in slack.

20a. You see a fellow staff member abusing his powers in-game.
Immediately make a staff report as per the forums and alert any other in game staff to that behavior.

21. You see a player talking in OOC chat about what he did with your mom last night.
Just ignore it. If I took everything that someone did with my mom on the internet seriously I wouldn't survive.

Any additional information you'd like to add?

I have been a mod previously, and passed my trial. I thought I had retired properly once my work flow changed. I know I put 'And I would add a note' but you note literally everything you do as a Mod so I figured it proper to add.

Overall, several of your answers are with a lack of detail about what you would do, some of them focusing only on one specific scenario. Even though you were already a moderator, I believe you could have put more effort into your app, and I realize that you also have some of the old rules in mind, which you need to change to be a moderator.

Even so, you were a great moderator, so I believe you just need to become familiar with CM again. I do not know much about how active you are, but I am sure that Feweh and other admins will check this out in determining the outcome of your application.

Anyway, your answer to question 20a makes me neutral about your app. Staff members need to count on each other, not stab another one in the back in such a way.

EDIT: As much as the answer to question 20a is wrong, this and all other minor problems of your app can be worked through during your trial period. Good luck Downpour +1, it will be nice to have someone from the old guard on the staff.

Can't really add anything more to what Nescau said. Especially with 20a. though. You were a mod back when we did things like having other staff members making staff complaints against each other. Now, with the senior system, which you only experienced a little of, we've internalized that. Instead of making a staff complaint, you'd go directly to the staff member's senior.

Otherwise, I really don't see any issues that wouldn't be ironed out in trial, and I'd love to see you back on the team. +1

I find that Localized's answers are mostly correct, though there are some exceptions like 20a.

LD was a good mod before and I think, after adjusting to being away, he'll do a hell of a job like last time.

Other than number that, I'll give LD a +1.

20a hit alittle close to home given that when I was applying to staff, it was right when the SAS incident was very public and if I notice a fellow staff member doing it you can bet twenty players noticed it as well.

Though all in all going to the forums is something a player should do, given Mods have access to Slack and msay I would utilize those avenues instead.

Howdy, some more feedback for you. I didn't read what others have previously said before writing these out so you might have some duplicate criticism.

1. Well I can't think of a single round where we don't have an accidental discharge at round start, and nine times out of ten it's left to the MPs. 'as far as I know' That said if he has a note history of 'accidental' discharges I speak to him about it, and depending on a mix of his attitude, the extent of the damage, and his history on the issue he would get a three hour ban up to a twenty four hour ban

6. This was mostly due to the rifle and less because of the armor, though as long as he wans't shooting randomly, a SM to the CMP or MP, or the command staff.

7. He shouldn't have started the surgery to begin with, but if it was a first time issue for powergaming then I would tell him to cauterize and ONLY cauterize the wound and of course leave a not about it. Though...given our new skill system, I think this is now impossible.

15. Context is always key here. If I marked this report, I check the most recent larva that this xeno saw, get it's CKEY, and check it against the other Larva's Ckeys. For sake of scenario we'll say this happened three times under the same ckey, and there was a safe nest it was currently in, and if could have ran to the Ovipositer queen. Under those circumstances is what I based my choice. If I questioned the player and lets say he was trying to get near the queen or away from nested marines and he ran into a scouted squad, on another life a marine unnested and managed to knife/shoot him, and another life when he moved the hive was under attack and he was just unlucky and caught a stray round, in that case I would simply leave it be, in both these cases however I feel like it's pertinent to check his notes for a pattern of xeno suicide as it may be a indication he tows the line of cheating.

20a After speaking with some other staff My course of action would be thus: Get as much evidence as I could, if I could reach you immediately Via Slack or in game I would. Otherwise I would handle him the same as a player, Amessaging them as to what I witnessed and at the very least getting a statement and instructing him to stop. From there I would leave it to the Senior staff to handle in the long term.

I hope this answers your questions, and if you have any others I'm more then happy to go into more detail in my thought process.
