Communication and you or HELP!

Post by nerocavalier » 16 Nov 2017, 00:51

This is a lot of common sense but that can be hard to find.

Communicating for help
Now this shouldn't have to be said but when you're in danger, you should really say where you are. A simple help alerts people that you're in trouble but that doesn't give them magical awareness on where you are. They'll have to guess off of sounds and or the last place they saw you if they can. Or they simply won't care. Naturally, you don't have to write a paragraph on where you are because you'll be dead by the time you finish, but a general location helps.

Examples on good cries of help:
  • "OH GOD, HYDRO!"
  • "I can't move north of medical."
  • "Doc, come back, I'm bleeding out in the OR."
Examples of bad cries of help:
  • "help"
  • "I am under assault by a quadruped xenomorph hostile, which is capable of deflecting bullets with its bulky, armored carapace and accelerating at a ludicrous velocity to breach the very walls of this colony's circular facility of growing sustenance." "It has also stomped off my leg."

Communicating with Staff
You have this option in the Admin tab. This can be used to ask mentors any questions or to report wrong-doing to moderators. You can also make our times a lot easier if you are very clear in what you need.

Good ahelp examples:
  • "Urist McStandard has shot Urist McEngineer for no reason!"
  • "Can I get a map?"

Bad ahelp examples:
  • "i'm griffed"
  • "how much damage does barrel charger add?"
  • "The FitnessGram Pacer Test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues..."

Communicating with fellow marines
Seriously, don't stand in a corner and watch youtube videos. There's other people to talk to, and we're a medRP server. Go talk to people, ask your squad how they're doing. If you're on FOB duty, especially try talking to people. Sure, it might seem like a chore but you might find it fun and entertaining. If nothing else, it might make people more motivated to spare a glance at your mangled, burnt corpse.

Good examples of talking:
  • "Hey, Jimmy, how's your family doing?"
  • "Goddamn shotgun keeps jammin', need some help here."
  • "How's the weather, Jeff?"
Bad examples of talking:

Communicating orders
If you have something that you want done now, do NOT be vague and general about it. Pick a marine, tell them to do it. This makes it far more likely for it to actually get done instead of people going "not my problem". Volunteer people to get it done. A major part is getting orders through is to keep it simple but not too simple. There's a difference between going "Flank the enemy" and "Flank the enemy by going around science while Alpha and bravo keeps them pinned at hydro." More importantly, make sure people know what each other are doing. It'd suck terribly for attacks if they can't coordinate and xenos go to kill the marines coming from around science.
Troublesome, as usual.

I would add that radio is a lossy channel. The recipient may or may not got your message. So whenever you are told to do something, respond.
  • [SO] ".u Alpha needs more metal."
    [RO] ".u I'm ordering."
It doesn't have to be directly to the one that the order came from:
  • [RO] ".u CTs, put metal on alpha pad!"
This is just as good. Although the SO is not addressed, he knows the metal is coming.

Or if SL orders you to guard the west side, you don't even have to tell anything if he can see that you moved to the west barricades. But if he can't, you should say something like:
  • "Aye, Sergeant."
  • "Guarding west side."
so he knows his message wasn't lost in the sea of text.

Communication is always important but so is noticing the body language of your fellow marines. Granted, they don't actually move so it's hard to decipher what these arcane actions and movements mean.

A few consistent ones however are when marines are moving slow. They're likely wounded, with un-splinted fractures doing horrible things to their soft internal organs. It's pretty good to walk up, grab him and drag their broken body to a medic for fixing.

Marines with their rifles up usually, in my experience at least, means there's a contact nearby and you should probably be ready to shoot something. If a marine is sprinting away from combat it's also probably a bad idea to go and investigate what they're running from.

Then you have audio language, INVESTIGATE gunshots. Investigate screams, investigate slashing sounds. Could save a life!

I macroed screaming for easy access, and I use it many times when I'm in danger or dying. Sure, people may not hear my screams of agony but it's a good arpee to scream and cry when my limbs are being torn off.

Now that I think of it, I should macro crying for easy access too!
I play as:

Phillip Driver, the coolest Charlie Squad marine main on the block.
and...
Jim the Synthetic.

I think people are used to just yell out 'HELP' with no location since in other servers, there are usually dedicated jobs who can tell security about your location using suit sensors and crew monitoring consoles.

Unless you're exceptionally short on time, even in SS13, there's no real reason just to yell 'help' without any further information. The AI can track you, but they don't have eyes everywhere. Your suit sensors might be on, but it's very possible that you forgot to put them all the way up, meaning anybody viewing you can only see your vitals. Chances are, if a traitor has got to you, you're already dead. Just let them kill you, while giving out as much information as possible. Security can use that extra detail you give them to track the individual down rapidly, and you'll be cloned in an instant.

Sort of preaching to the choir, but yeah, this advice still applies in the main gamemode.
