The Utility PFC Commandments

Post by Surrealistik » 21 Jan 2018, 18:28

WIP TBC

A guide to playing a utility PFC that trades in some killing power for healing and engineering utility.

You fight on the frontlines as needed while helping the Engineers and Medics do their jobs by ripping up vents/pipes, welding doors, repairing sentries and robolimbs, dismantling windows and grilles, moving vendors, breaking stuff down into metal and keeping marines (and yourself) up right.

#1: Thou Shalt Get Thy Attachments:

As a utility PFC who is packing a satchel, you have one weapon, so you need to make it count; it must be versatile and capable of handling nearly any opponent in any situation.

To this end you'll be taking a M41A rifle with one of the following loadouts:

Masterkey:

Burst Fire Assembly:

Quickfire Adapter:

Forward Grip:

Gyroscopic Stabilizer:

Important: You can mitigate some of the risk of not using a Magnetic Harness by having a readily accessed key bound to the following macro for quick retrieval of your weapon in the event you drop it: pick-up M41A-pulse-rifle-MK2\nActivate-Held-Object

#2: Thou Shalt Get Thy Gear:

Back, Satchel: You'll want to pack a Night Raider survival knife in your boot, 2 boxes of flares, 1 box of buckshot (if using the Masterkey; otherwise take another box/medikit of medical supplies or flares), 1 medikit (ask Medbay or your Squad Medic or salvage one from the oxy lockers) filled with medical supplies; at least 2 stacks of advanced trauma kits or bandages, 2 stacks of advanced burn kits or ointment, 1 stack of splints, and an HF2 Health Scanner (optional) the rest can be tricord injectors and 1 box with the following in order of priority: a bodybag for hiding/ambushes, a wrench, a crowbar, a welder, wirecutters, (these are your utility tools, along with a screwdriver on your helmet), a bayonet (emergency weapon of last resort/good for clearing weed structures while in close quarters if you want to keep your weapon ready), tricordrazine injectors/healing supplies. A roller bed and cryobag are optional but very albeit situationally useful.

Your helmet should include a set of welding goggles (unless you're wearing them) and a screwdriver. Fill spare slots with stale protein bars.

Your armour should contain 2 HE grenades, or rifle magazines otherwise (or one slot with buckshot shells if you are running the Masterkey and have no webbing or general pouch that has buckshot shells; for easy retrieval when reloading).

You should have one to two first aid pouches loaded with tricordrazine injectors, with one tramadol injector for emergencies. Replacing one first aid pouch with a medium or large general pouch is acceptable; load this with magazines and one handful of shotgun shells (if you're taking Masterkey).

You should have an ammo rig loaded with rifle magazines.

If possible, get a medHUD so you can better serve as a ghetto field medic (ask Medbay or your Squad Medic).

If possible, get a webbing and load it with magazines and one handful of buckshot (if you're taking Masterkey).

Note that you won't always be able to gather all of this stuff; do the best you can and fill in the gaps where able.

A couple of demonstrative screenshots (I was unable to get everything on the list before deployment unfortunately):

#3: Thou Shalt Utilize Thy Potential:

So you're a PFC with a bunch of tools and utility items; what do?

During downtime when you're out of combat or are on the backline, mostly the following:

Engineering:
  1. Use your wirecutters to remove/reposition barbed wire; especially good for getting past otherwise impassable barbed wire blockaides.
  2. Use your crowbar and wrench to pry up floor tiles and remove pipe segments, vents and scrubbers to deny xenos valuable avenues of ambush/movement. Note that xenos can come out of pipes, if the connecting segment is disconnected, but they cannot get back in; this is useful if they'd disembark in front of a barricade firing line/sentry, and problematic if they can get out behind your defensive lines; avoid the latter at all costs.
  3. Use your welder to weld/unweld doors, vents and scrubbers, and to repair sentries, walls and robolimbs. Remember to equip and flip down your welding goggles/mask.
  4. Use all of your mighty tools to dismantle standard walls.
  5. Use your screwdriver and crowbar to neatly and quickly remove windows.
  6. Use your trusty screwdriver to gouge out the eyes of unsuspecting Predators.
  7. Use your wrench to unsecure and secure vendors and girders; great for retrieving that First Aid Station or MedVend or making an impromptu barricade.
  8. Use your wrench (and welder as necessary) to break down tables, chairs and racks into metal for your engineer friends.
  9. Use your wirecutters to bypass barbed barricades in a pinch.
  10. Use your crowbar to open depowered doors; no need to wait for the squad engineer!
Medical:
  1. Dose the badly injured and those to be revived with one of your many Tricordrazine injectors. Do not succumb to the temptation to use one more than one as this heightens the risk of accidental overdoses (doubly so if the patient is already bandaged, which implies that he may have received one tricord dose already).
  2. Use your MedHUD (hopefully) and copious medical supplies to identify, heal up and splint said badly injured marines.
  3. Remember to recharge and restock your supplies at MedVends and First Aid Stations, such as spent Tricordrazine injectors (including ones you find on the gorund).
  4. Don't use bandages and ointment on someone if a Medic is likely to treat them in the immediate future or if a Medic is in the process of treating as his application of trauma/burn kits restore more health.
  5. Use your HF2 Analyzer (if you took it) to identify your patient's needs if examining and listening to him is insufficient.
Misc:
  1. Hide in your bodybag to ambush unsuspecting Xenos... or just hide. Most effective with a burst damage weapon like a BFA or Masterkey rifle.
Remember, unlike devout/specialized combat PFCs, you're always useful and you should always be busy and using your expanded capabilities whenever possible.

I really hope this method is approved of. I used to go as a utility SL, until people made a stink about it.

Also a general tip for any marine, pick up empty Tricord injectors. They can be refilled at the dropships.

I'm unsure if this would be relevant with the utility PFC build you're describing, but I've found that a PFC dedicated to breaching through metal (not reinforced) walls with buckshot helps immensely at opening up chokepoints. Works out with reinforced walls too, but takes a lot of time without help.

The shotgun and the buckshot (in a backpack) are carried in your hands rather than being stored in your inventory, so you just drop the bag and use the shotgun or drop the bag and shotgun and switch to your primary in your suit slot when you come in contact with xenos.

I would say it's a lot more combat-oriented, but it can have its uses in the backline such as opening up the walls between LZ1 and kitchen.

Also, standards can deconstruct walls?

Yes, Standards can deconstruct walls with the correct tools (standard walls at least); this may be faster than breaching with buckshot via Masterkey (since it's the only way to use buckshot with the rifle as your only weapon), but I haven't tested. Also, how does rifle spam compare for demolishing walls, especially with the BFA?

Added the 'Forward Grip' rifle loadout/configuration; especially good for newer/less experienced players.

Rifle spam COULD work with BFA, I've done it with a standard rail+bayo rifle, but the issue is of course ammo. In a backpack, you can carry a max of 10 magazines, so 400 bullets. In contrast, you can carry 7 buckshot boxes. Assuming each buckshot shot hits walls with three buckshot, you get 750 buckshot pellets max. I'm pretty sure that a bullet and a buckshot pellet each do the same amount of damage to a wall, so you can take down almost twice the amount of walls with buckshot.

Honestly, I'd rather just decon the walls; it would probably take the same amount of time (or not much more) and _much_ less ammo.

Also if they do the same damage, you're probably getting through faster with standard burst, nevermind the BFA because your projectiles per second are definitely higher.

That said situationally useful, especially if you can't get your hands on welding goggles.

Added the Gyro attachment loadouts. I don't generally recommend this for your one and only weapon since it's only really decent at close range out to medium at best, and gyros are better saved for specs/medics and engis but it's useful if you want to engage in front line assaults.

This is why we can't have nice things.

I'll bring up medical/engineering adjustments.
PFCs shouldn't be ghetto medics or engineers. They are riflemen, and should dedicate themselves to shooting bullets. Some healing supplies are understood, but this guide is excessive. Glad someone brought it to my attention.

My concern is if you kill too much PFC utility, the two weapon PFC will end up being the end all/be all meta. Right now there's a pretty decent balance between more dakka and more utility

PFC are supposed to be bullets, and not much outside bullets.
